What is the dealer fee in Florida and can I negotiate it?

Florida does not cap dealer fees, sometimes called doc or pre-delivery fees, but the dealer must disclose them and charge every customer the same amount. In the St. Augustine and Jacksonville market the fee usually runs 800 to 1,500 dollars in 2026. Dealers rarely remove it, but you can negotiate the vehicle price down by the same amount, so focus on the out the door total.

How much is sales tax on a car in St. Johns County?

Florida charges 6 percent state sales tax on vehicle purchases, plus the St. Johns County discretionary surtax, which applies only to the first 5,000 dollars of the price. On a 35,000 dollar car that is about 2,100 in state tax plus a small county amount. Trade-in value is deducted before tax is calculated, which is one real advantage of trading in rather than selling privately. Confirm current rates with the tax collector.

Where are the car dealers near St. Augustine?

The main local strip is US 1 north and south of downtown St. Augustine, with several franchise and independent dealers between SR 16 and SR 312. Larger selections are 20 to 40 minutes away in Jacksonville along Atlantic Boulevard, Philips Highway, and the Avenues area, and in Orange Park. Nocatee and Ponte Vedra buyers often shop the Jacksonville Beaches dealers along Atlantic and Beach Boulevards.

Is it safe to buy a used car that lived near the beach?

It can be, but inspect it. Salt air accelerates rust on brake lines, subframes, exhaust, and underbody fasteners even when the body looks clean. Have a shop put it on a lift and check for corrosion and any signs of water intrusion under the carpet, which can indicate flooding. A vehicle garaged in Ponte Vedra is a different story than one parked outside on Vilano Beach for eight years.

Do I need a title and registration appointment in St. Johns County?

If you buy from a dealer, the dealer handles title and registration and charges you for it. For a private sale, you go to the St. Johns County Tax Collector, which has offices in St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra, and Julington Creek. Appointments are recommended and often required for title work. Bring the signed title, proof of Florida insurance, and your ID. Check the tax collector site for current requirements.

Can I buy a golf cart or low speed vehicle from a dealer in Nocatee?

Yes, several dealers in and around Nocatee, Ponte Vedra, and St. Augustine sell golf carts and street legal low speed vehicles. Low speed vehicles need a title, registration, and insurance in Florida and can be driven on roads posted 35 mph or less. Plain golf carts have different rules and age limits for drivers. Confirm what your community allows before you buy.
