How much does boat service cost in St. Augustine?

Marine shop labor rates in St. Johns County run about 140 to 195 dollars an hour in 2026, with dealer service departments at the high end. A 100-hour service on a single mid-size outboard, including oil, filters, gear lube, and plugs, typically costs 450 to 800 dollars. Mobile mechanics add a travel fee of 50 to 150 dollars. Twins and larger engines cost more.

What does bottom paint cost?

Haul, pressure wash, light sanding, and a coat of ablative bottom paint on a 22 to 26 foot boat typically runs 1,200 to 2,200 dollars in local yards, with the paint itself a big share of that. Larger boats and a full strip and barrier coat cost considerably more. Boats kept on lifts or in dry stack can often skip bottom paint entirely.

How much is dry stack or wet slip storage in St. Johns County?

Dry stack storage in the St. Augustine, Vilano, and Palm Valley area typically runs 18 to 28 dollars per foot per month in 2026, so 450 to 700 dollars monthly for a 25 foot boat, often with a waitlist. Wet slips run 15 to 25 dollars per foot. Trailer storage lots are 75 to 200 dollars a month. Ask what is included for washing, flushing, and launches.

Do I need a boating license in Florida?

Florida does not issue a boating license, but anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 must complete an approved boating safety course and carry the education card to operate a boat with 10 horsepower or more. Courses are available online and through the Coast Guard Auxiliary and local groups. Rules for personal watercraft and rentals have additional requirements, so ask the rental operator.

Is the St. Augustine Inlet dangerous?

It can be. St. Augustine Inlet is a natural inlet that shoals and shifts, and the channel is not always where the chart shows it. Local towing and salvage operators pull boats off the bars regularly. Run it on an incoming tide in daylight the first time, follow current local knowledge, and consider a towing membership. Matanzas Inlet to the south is shallow and generally not recommended for anything but small boats with local experience.

Where can I launch a boat in St. Johns County?

Public ramps include the Vilano Beach boat ramp, Lighthouse Park on Anastasia Island, Palm Valley on the Intracoastal, Doug Crane Park and Butler Beach area ramps on the southern end, and Trout Creek and other St. Johns River access points on the west side. Some charge a parking fee and the popular ones fill by mid-morning on weekends. Private marinas also launch for a fee.

Boat & Marine Services in Jacksonville & Northeast Florida, FL

Boat & Marine Services in Northeast Florida

St. Johns County is boat country on two sides. The Intracoastal Waterway runs the length of the county from Palm Valley to Matanzas, the St. Augustine and Matanzas inlets open to the Atlantic, and the St. Johns River sits on the west side at Julington Creek, Trout Creek, and Palatka. Boat and marine services here cover outboard repair and service, bottom paint, fiberglass and gelcoat, electronics, canvas, trailer work, detailing, dry storage, and dealers for center consoles, bay boats, pontoons, and kayaks. Salt water is unforgiving, so flushing engines, zincs, and bottom paint are routine. St. Augustine Inlet shoals and shifts, and the local towing and salvage operators stay busy. Hurricane season means haul-out plans, and the marinas and dry stacks in St. Augustine, Vilano, Palm Valley, and Julington Creek fill before storms. Florida requires a boating safety education card for operators born on or after January 1, 1988.

How to choose a boat & marine in Northeast Florida

Find a tech certified for your engine

Yamaha, Mercury, Suzuki, and Honda outboards dominate the Intracoastal and the inlet, and warranty work has to be done by a dealer certified for that brand. For out-of-warranty engines, an independent shop with the right certification is often faster and cheaper. Ask what brands they service and how far out they are booked.

Decide between mobile service and the yard

Mobile mechanics will come to your lift in Palm Valley, Camachee Cove, or Julington Creek for service, electronics, and minor repairs, usually with a travel fee. Bottom paint, fiberglass, and lower unit work need a haul-out at a yard. Know which you need before you call.

Check how they handle salt water

Ask about their process for flushing, corrosion inspection, and anode replacement. A shop that does not talk about corrosion is not used to boats that run the inlet. Trailers that get dunked in salt need regular bearing and brake service too.

Ask about storage and hurricane plans

Dry stack storage in St. Augustine, Vilano, and Palm Valley has waitlists, and most require you to move or secure your boat when a storm is named. If you keep a boat in the water, know who will haul it and what it costs. The yards fill up fast once a cone is drawn.

Get a written estimate and ask about parts lead time

Outboard parts and electronics can take weeks to arrive in season. Get the estimate in writing with labor rate, estimated hours, and parts. Ask how they handle it if the repair uncovers something else. Reputable shops call before the bill changes.
