Do I need a boating license in Florida?

Florida does not issue a boating license, but anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 must complete an approved boating safety course and carry the education card to operate a boat with 10 horsepower or more. Courses are available online and through the Coast Guard Auxiliary and local groups. Rules for personal watercraft and rentals have additional requirements, so ask the rental operator.

Is the St. Augustine Inlet dangerous?

It can be. St. Augustine Inlet is a natural inlet that shoals and shifts, and the channel is not always where the chart shows it. Local towing and salvage operators pull boats off the bars regularly. Run it on an incoming tide in daylight the first time, follow current local knowledge, and consider a towing membership. Matanzas Inlet to the south is shallow and generally not recommended for anything but small boats with local experience.

Where can I launch a boat in St. Johns County?

Public ramps include the Vilano Beach boat ramp, Lighthouse Park on Anastasia Island, Palm Valley on the Intracoastal, Doug Crane Park and Butler Beach area ramps on the southern end, and Trout Creek and other St. Johns River access points on the west side. Some charge a parking fee and the popular ones fill by mid-morning on weekends. Private marinas also launch for a fee.
