Where is the best authentic Mexican food in St. Augustine?

The family taquerias along US 1 south of downtown, on SR 207 and in Hastings tend to be the most traditional, with al pastor off a trompo, birria, menudo on weekends and house tortillas. Downtown and the beach have a few regional Mexican restaurants with mezcal lists and higher prices. Check our listings and look for the ones that mention street tacos and handmade tortillas.

Yes. Corn tortillas are naturally gluten-free, and bean, cheese, veggie and mushroom tacos are on most menus. Taquerias are usually happy to make substitutions if you ask plainly.

Birria is slow-braised beef or goat in a chile broth, served as a stew or stuffed into tacos that are dipped in the consomme and griddled. Several taquerias along US 1, in Hastings and in the north county plazas sell birria tacos, usually 4 to 6 dollars each or 14 to 20 for a plate with consomme. Weekends are the surest days to find it.

Yes. Most Tex-Mex restaurants and many taquerias offer taco bars priced per person, typically 14 to 22 dollars with two proteins, rice, beans, tortillas and toppings, and fajita trays by the half or full pan. Give at least two days notice, more for weekends and graduation season in May. Ask whether delivery, setup and chafing dishes are included.
