How much does a tutor cost in St. Johns County?

Private academic tutoring in St. Johns County typically runs 45 to 90 dollars an hour in 2026. College students and new teachers are at the low end. Certified teachers with subject expertise and SAT or ACT specialists charge 75 to 125 dollars. Learning centers price by the month, usually 300 to 700 dollars for two sessions a week. Online tutoring is often 20 to 30 percent cheaper.

When should we start SAT or ACT prep?

Most families here start the summer before junior year or in the early fall of junior year, aiming at a spring test date. That leaves time for a retake before senior-year applications. Students at Nease, Ponte Vedra, Bartram Trail, and Creekside often take the PSAT in October of junior year, and a prep tutor can use that score as a baseline.

Do tutors come to your house in Nocatee or Ponte Vedra?

Many do, and some charge a travel fee of 10 to 20 dollars for it. Others prefer to meet at a library branch, a coffee shop, or their own home studio. Nocatee and Ponte Vedra have enough demand that plenty of tutors live nearby. In Hastings, Elkton, and the far west side, in-home options are thinner and online sessions fill the gap.

How much are piano, guitar, or voice lessons?

A half-hour weekly music lesson in St. Johns County usually costs 30 to 45 dollars, and a full hour runs 55 to 85 dollars. Teachers with conservatory degrees or performance careers charge more. Studios in St. Augustine and Ponte Vedra often bill monthly and include recital fees. Expect to buy or rent the instrument separately.

What about swim, surf, tennis, and golf lessons?

Private swim lessons run about 40 to 70 dollars per half hour and are in highest demand in spring before pool season. Surf lessons at St. Augustine Beach, Vilano, and Ponte Vedra are typically 75 to 150 dollars for a 90-minute private, less in groups. Tennis and golf pros at area clubs and public courses charge roughly 60 to 150 dollars an hour depending on their certification.

Can my child get free tutoring through the school?

Sometimes. Many St. Johns County schools run before- or after-school help sessions, peer tutoring through honor societies, and teacher office hours at no cost. Ask the guidance counselor what exists at your school. Public library branches also host homework help at times. These work well for light support but rarely replace a dedicated tutor for a real gap.

Tutors & Lessons in Northeast Florida

St. Johns County runs one of the highest-rated school districts in Florida, and that raises the bar for everyone. Parents in Nocatee, Julington Creek, Ponte Vedra, and World Golf Village hire tutors to keep kids on grade level, prep for the SAT and ACT, get through Algebra 1 and the state end-of-course exams, or manage a heavy AP and IB load at Bartram Trail, Creekside, Ponte Vedra, Nease, and St. Augustine High. Lessons are a separate market: piano, guitar, voice, swim, surf, tennis, golf, and language teachers work out of homes, studios, and the beaches. Most tutoring here happens after school between 3:30 and 7, so the good ones book up by September. Expect in-person rates to vary by the tutor's credentials and your side of the county, and ask whether they come to you or you drive to them.

How to choose a tutoring & lessons in Northeast Florida

Name the actual goal first

Catching up in fourth grade reading, passing the Algebra 1 EOC, and raising an SAT score are three different jobs that need three different tutors. Write down the goal and the deadline before you call anyone. A tutor who is great at test strategy may not be patient with a struggling reader.

Ask about experience with St. Johns County schools

A tutor who already knows the pacing at Bartram Trail or the math sequence at Landrum Middle will waste less of your hour. Ask what schools their current students attend and whether they are familiar with the district's online gradebook. Current and retired district teachers tutor on the side and are often the best value.

Decide between a private tutor and a center

Learning centers along US 1, in Nocatee Town Center, and near Durbin Park offer structure, diagnostics, and consistent hours, usually on a monthly contract. Private tutors are more flexible and more personal but can cancel. Centers suit long-term skill gaps. Private tutors suit a specific class or exam.

Check background and references

Anyone working alone with your child should give you references you can actually call. Ask whether they have had a background check, which is standard for anyone affiliated with the school district or a center. For music and sports lessons, ask where the lessons happen and whether a parent can sit in.

Agree on cancellation and payment before the first session

Most local tutors charge for sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours notice, and many sell packages of 5 or 10 hours up front. Get the rate, the travel fee if any, and the makeup policy in a text or email. It avoids awkward conversations later.
