How much is a haircut in St. Augustine?

In 2026 a women's cut and style at a full service salon in St. Johns County runs about 55 to 110 dollars, and more with a senior stylist in Ponte Vedra. Men's cuts at barbershops are typically 28 to 50, with beard trims adding 15 to 25. Walk-in chain locations are cheaper, around 20 to 35. Kids' cuts generally run 20 to 40.

How much does balayage cost in Ponte Vedra or Nocatee?

A full balayage with toner and blowout typically runs 225 to 400 dollars locally, and partial balayage 150 to 275. Long, thick, or very dark hair that needs more lightener and time can go higher, and color correction is usually priced hourly at 100 to 175 per hour. Most stylists require a consultation and a deposit for first-time color appointments.

What is the best hair treatment for Florida humidity?

Keratin and similar smoothing treatments are the most common choice here and last two to four months, costing 250 to 450 dollars depending on hair length. Lighter bond building or gloss treatments help with frizz without changing texture. The honest answer depends on your hair type, so ask a stylist who works with humidity daily which option fits your hair and how you style it.

Do barbers in Florida need a license?

Yes. Barbers must hold a Florida barber license or a restricted barber license, and cosmetologists may also cut men's hair under their own license. The shop needs a barbershop establishment license. Licenses must be posted at the chair, and you can verify them on the Florida DBPR website. Straight razor shaves in particular should only be done by a licensed barber.

How often should I get my hair cut in Florida?

Every six to eight weeks for most women's styles and every three to five weeks for short men's cuts and fades. Sun, salt water, and chlorine dry out ends faster here, so people who swim or surf often trim every six weeks even with long hair. Color clients usually book a gloss or toner between full appointments to fight brassiness.

Should I tip a stylist who owns the salon?

Tipping is customary in St. Johns County regardless of ownership, and 18 to 20 percent is the norm. Some owner-stylists and suite renters say they do not expect tips; if they tell you so, respect it. If an assistant shampooed or blow dried you, a separate 5 to 10 dollar tip for them is appreciated.

Salons & Barbers in Fernandina Beach & Amelia Island

Salons and barbers in Fernandina Beach & Amelia Island range from quick walk-in cuts to specialists in balayage, extensions, curly hair, and smoothing treatments built for Florida humidity. Many stylists in Fernandina Beach & Amelia Island rent a chair or a suite, so the person matters more than the sign on the door. Check that the stylist's Florida license is posted, read reviews that mention the specific service you want, and ask for a consultation before any big color change so the price does not surprise you.

How to choose a hair salon & barber in Fernandina Beach & Amelia Island

Find a stylist, not just a salon

Many of the best stylists in Ponte Vedra, Nocatee, and St. Augustine work in suites or rent a booth, and their reputation is personal. Look at their own social media for recent work on hair like yours. Ask whether the stylist specializes in color, cutting, curly hair, or extensions; very few are great at all of them.

Check for the Florida license

Cosmetologists, barbers, and hair specialists must be licensed by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation and the license must be displayed at the station. The salon itself also needs an establishment license. You can look up any license online. This matters most for chemical services where a bad job means breakage.

Book a consultation for major color or smoothing

Blonding, color correction, keratin, and extensions are priced by the hour or by how much product and time your hair needs. A 15 minute consultation lets the stylist look at your hair, explain what is realistic, and give you a price range. Walking in cold for a big change is how people end up with a 500 dollar surprise.

Ask about humidity and sun strategy

A stylist who lives here will talk about brassiness from salt water and pool chlorine, toners and glosses between appointments, UV protection for color, and which smoothing treatments hold up from June to September. If the advice sounds like it came from a magazine in Ohio, keep looking.

Understand the cancellation and tipping norms

Most salons and independent stylists in the county require a card on file and charge 50 to 100 percent for no-shows or cancellations inside 24 to 48 hours. Tipping 18 to 20 percent is standard. If a stylist owns the suite, tipping is still customary locally, though some decline it.
