Question 1

How much does a mechanic charge per hour in St. Augustine?

Accepted Answer

Independent repair shops in St. Johns County typically charge 120 to 185 dollars per hour in 2026. European and diesel specialists lean toward the top, and dealership service departments in Jacksonville often run 175 to 250. Most shops bill from a flat rate guide, so a job quoted at two hours costs two hours even if the tech is fast or slow.

Question 2

Why do car batteries die so fast in Florida?

Accepted Answer

Heat, not cold, is what kills batteries, and Northeast Florida summers cook them. Expect two to three years from a typical battery here, and less if the car sits in a driveway in full sun. Signs include slow cranking on a hot afternoon, dim lights at idle, and a battery warning after a week of short trips. Have it load tested each spring; most shops do that for free or a small fee.

Question 3

Does Florida require a written estimate for car repairs?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Under the Florida Motor Vehicle Repair Act, a registered shop must give you a written estimate for any repair expected to cost more than 100 dollars unless you waive it in writing, and cannot exceed the estimate by more than a small margin without your approval. You are also entitled to an itemized invoice and to inspect or keep replaced parts if you ask before the work starts.

Question 4

How much does an AC repair cost on a car in Florida?

Accepted Answer

A simple leak check and recharge runs 150 to 350 dollars locally, more for vehicles that use the newer R-1234yf refrigerant. A compressor replacement with receiver drier and system flush typically costs 1,200 to 2,500 depending on the vehicle. Condensers damaged by road debris on I-95 land around 600 to 1,200. Any shop that offers only a cheap top-off without finding the leak is selling you the same repair again next summer.

Question 5

Should I take my car to the dealer or an independent shop?

Accepted Answer

Under warranty, use the dealer for covered repairs but you are free to have routine maintenance done anywhere without voiding it, as long as you keep records. Out of warranty, a good independent shop in St. Johns County is usually 20 to 40 percent less and more flexible. Dealers still make sense for recalls, complex software issues, and some hybrid and EV work.

Question 6

How often should I replace tires in Florida if the tread is fine?

Accepted Answer

Sun and heat age rubber whether or not you drive, so most manufacturers suggest replacing tires at six years regardless of tread, and ten years is the absolute limit. Look for the four digit date code on the sidewall. Sidewall cracking and vibration on I-95 are signs they are done. Keep them inflated to the door sticker pressure, checked in the morning before the heat raises it.
