Koi Sushi is an absolute gem and has quickly become one of my favorite spots. The interior is so beautiful and thoughtfully designed that it genuinely feels like dining at a high-end restaurant in NYC or Dallas. The staff are incredibly attentive, always checking in and making sure everything is just right. There’s a great variety of food options, with generous portions that are plated so nicely it feels special as soon as it hits the table. I’ve been eating here more than a dozen times and still haven’t managed to try even half of the menu! Oddly enough, my children love this place even more than I do. I especially love the fresh sea urchin — it’s a rare find in the Jacksonville and St. Augustine area, and they do it so well that it alone is worth the visit. The most important part? The prices are so reasonable for the large portions — I can always bring home plenty more leftovers for the next day!
A Stylish New Kid on the Block: Koi Sushi & Thai Bar, St. Augustine Phillips Highway has a new reason to slow down. There’s something exciting about catching a restaurant in its early days — before the crowds discover it, before the waiting list, before the regulars claim their corners. Koi Sushi & Thai Bar, newly opened along Phillips Highway in St. Augustine, has that fresh-out-of-the-box energy, and if first impressions count for anything, this place is already ahead of the curve. Walk in and you’ll understand immediately why the buzz is building. The décor is confident and contemporary — warm lighting, clean modern lines, and a commanding projector screen that gives the space a lounge-like ambiance rarely seen in Thai restaurants around here. Honestly, for atmosphere alone, Koi earns a spot among the best-looking Thai and sushi bars in the greater Jacksonville area. It doesn’t feel like a strip-mall afterthought; it feels intentional. The attention to detail carries through to the table. No generic plastic tumblers here — your drinks arrive in sleek, stylish glassware that signals the kitchen and management are thinking beyond the basics. Food presentation is equally polished: colorful, well-plated, clearly cared for. You eat with your eyes first, and Koi knows it. Now, the food. This is where the story gets a little more nuanced — not disappointing, but honest. We worked through four dishes. The chicken vegetable tempura was decent, competently fried with a light batter, though it didn’t quite reach the crunch and depth that would make it memorable — a 6 out of 10. The chicken pad thai, ordered at spice level 4, arrived looking the part but tasted surprisingly flat. For a dish that should have some fire and complexity, it leaned too safe. Another 6. The shrimp fried rice fared better — well-seasoned, satisfying, and the shrimp carried some real flavor. A solid 7. The spicy crispy chicken matched it — boldly textured and the most crowd-pleasing dish of the evening. Another 7, and the one most likely to earn a repeat order. The unexpected highlight? A complimentary appetizer that arrived unannounced early in the meal. It was genuinely good — a small gesture that made a big impression and set a warm, generous tone for the evening. Here’s the thing about Koi: the bones are exceptional. The location is smart, the space is gorgeous, the service has heart, and the presentation would make a far older restaurant envious. What needs catching up is the kitchen’s confidence with bold, layered flavors — the soul of good Thai food. Right now, the food is good. But this restaurant has the makings of great. Keep your eye on Koi Sushi & Thai Bar. If the kitchen finds its footing to match the flair of its surroundings, Phillips Highway may just have its next go-to destination. These Drunken Noodles were some of the best I have ever had! I got level 3 spice & it was very spicy but absolutely delicious. Our server was very nice & we even got a complimentary appetizer. I want to come back & try more on the menu!
Best Sushi I have ever had. I’m a sushi lover and have had top quality sushi in different countries and I can honestly say KOI is the best I’ve ever had. I tried the KOI roll as well as the lobster roll and they were both amazing. The Mongolian beef as well as appetizers were also outstanding. Our server Andrew was excellent. The whole experience was amazing. We have just found our sushi spot many delusions choices for the non sushi eaters as well. We also bought some of their chopsticks sets. They are so beautiful and high quality imported from Japan. Excellent experience from beginning to end.
We always eat here, service is great, food is well presented and delicious! Ambiance is classy. Sorry for some of the photos, we keep forgetting to take one BEFORE we take a portion. A great way to end a Valentine’s weekend. Mauri and Andrew were both seasoned in their industry.
