Florida House Inn

This place has an excellent location, and the historic building certainly has charm. that said, it is in a state of disrepair and is pretty dirty. We stayed on the 2nd floor: decking was bubbling, cracked, dirty and there was water pooling everywhere including right outside our room which my wife slipped on. you can tell its been sitting a while as its green and slimy. the grounds are not kept up.. there were roaches both in our room and in the breakfast dining area. our room felt damp and smelled really musty. our room had broken tiles on the floor. Scott in the mermaid bar was the silver lining.

Beds were very comfortable. It is on the historical registry so I knew the rooms would be rustic but I did expect to have a good shower. The shower in room five is a Clawfoot tub sitting inside of a tiled area with a wall shower head. I would have had to get into the tube and stand to use the shower. I'm an older person and was a little worried about slipping so ended up skipping the daily shower. Also, as an older person I would have appreciated a hand railing to help me up from the toilet. I can tell others have struggled and pushed on the sink to stand which has pulled from the wall and been re-calked multiple times. Overall, I would stay again just not room five. The location is in the middle of everything and cant be beat. The food is wonderful! They just need to give their rooms some TLC. But who stays in their room all day. As long as the bed is comfortable (it was) that is most important.

I’ve stayed here a couple times and the main draws are the location (although more about this below) and the building is charming and historical. The inn has a lot of potential. That said, the inn is right next door to the Green Turtle bar next door, which has (very loud) live music on Friday and Saturday (from 5 - midnight). The Green Turtle bar is one of the loudest properties in the Historic section of Fernandina Beach. So, it will be very loud on Friday and Saturday nights. Don’t expect to sleep while the music is playing (I couldn't). The inn should absolutely notify guests about this, but they don’t. Also, each room is very different so accommodations, comfort is completely dependent on the room you get, i.e., completely random and inconsistent. Last, management and staff are not available on property the majority of the day. Unfortunately, I won't be staying here again.

What do you expect when renting a room? For it to be safe and clean, right? Not at all what I got. The first picture is of the crack in the top of the door from the outside. Yes the light that you see is from the outside and I can only imagine what it costs them to air condition the place. The second picture is of the bugs in the corner of the room, probably got into the room in the gaping hole in the door shown in picture #1. The 3rd picture is of someone else’s hair in the bed when I pulled back the sheets. I’m absolutely disgusted and will be sleeping in my clothes. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else.
