I am currently attending barber school. One of the things that I like to do is to go and visit different barber shops around town. In doing so I try to see the difference in environments, techniques, and customer service. This helps me learn what kind of shop I should look for to work in the future as well as what kind of service shall I provide to customers. A couple of weeks ago while driving down Cassat Ave I noticed this shop and for some reason it stood out and I even thought to myself that it might have been a new shop that had opened recently. Even though there are many barber shops along this specific avenue I noticed something different, something classy, something "old school" from the outside looks of this shop. They say not to judge a book by its cover, so today after work I decided to stop by and give this shop a try. There was no one parked outside of the shop when I got there, but since their "Open" sign was still visible I walked in. I was greeted by Mrs. Debra, the very nice and welcoming owner of the establishment. After consulting with me and what kind of haircut I wanted, she turned the sign to "Closed". I had just walked right in without even paying attention of their hours of operation. I had walked in right at 5:00pm. But she smiled and greeted me as if I had come in with enough time before closing. During the hair cut I proceeded to ask questions about her and the shop and the area, a usual thing I do whenever I do my little barber shop tours. To my surprise they were celebrating this month (07-2017) their 35th year in business. Mrs. Debra was able to execute my hair cut (a traditional side-part pomp with a skin fade on the sides and back), and carry on a very engaged conversation with me. This is something I do enjoy a lot. As a barber student, all my friends and clients want to talk to me about their day, life, etc. So I can't understand when people just want to sit quiet during a whole hair cut session, unless they are just super introverted as some people I know. Anyways, she has been doing this for 35 years, she loves what she does and she executes it very well. I am not one to spend a whole lot of time online making reviews, but when someone really deserves it in my eyes, then I have to. There were certain things that I noticed that were a little different than to what I'm used to at other barber shops: 1. There are no websites, no social media profiles, no real way to find about the services and hours, or any other way to communicate with the owner of the shop other than by doing it the old way, either walking in or calling the shop's land line. It's surprising how they've remained open all of these years thanks to the good ol' word of mouth. They've paid $0 on advertisement, that speaks volumes. 2. They only take cash or check. It's a miracle that I had a $20 bill in my pocket because otherwise it would've gotten really awkward real quick. So no paying with card, Venmo, Apple Pay, PayPal, etc. While this can be a no-go for many, as long as you keep some cash on you then you're good to go. 3. They're haircut prices are WAY under what it is normally charged for elsewhere. But she just wants to take care of the community around her by providing quality haircuts at an affordable price. I simply wanted to contribute somehow by giving the shop at least a review talking about them and the really nice and comfortable shop Mrs. Debra has made. I will definitely will be stopping by to visit again.
Excellent cut at a very reasonable price. Great conversations while it happens!
Debra was very delightful. She listened and gave me a great haircut for a very reasonable price. I will definitely be returning.
I have decided to rewrite this review. This place is fantastic! You get a fantastic haircut at a great price with a wonderful Barber. Very friendly, old school atmosphere. I am so glad I found this place I will not be going anywhere else. I hope for her to remain in business for many years to come!
I was told you got to go to this place she's been here for years she has good prices and does a good job. And she did not disappoint. If your not here where are you. Greatest prices I ever seen. She did a real job cutting my Har and was very nice. The waiting room has a tv and magazine and books to keep to occupied while you wait. This is the place to be.
