Question 1

Where is the best authentic Mexican food in St. Augustine?

Accepted Answer

The family taquerias along US 1 south of downtown, on SR 207 and in Hastings tend to be the most traditional, with al pastor off a trompo, birria, menudo on weekends and house tortillas. Downtown and the beach have a few regional Mexican restaurants with mezcal lists and higher prices. Check our listings and look for the ones that mention street tacos and handmade tortillas.

Question 2

How much does Mexican food cost in St. Johns County?

Accepted Answer

Street tacos at a taqueria run about 3 to 5 dollars each in 2026, and a full lunch plate is 11 to 16. At a sit-down Tex-Mex restaurant, combo plates are 15 to 22, fajitas 20 to 30 for one and 36 to 52 for two, and house margaritas 9 to 14. Upscale Mexican in Ponte Vedra Beach runs 25 to 40 per entree.

Question 3

Which Mexican restaurants near Nocatee have good happy hours?

Accepted Answer

Most of the Tex-Mex restaurants in Nocatee Town Center, along CR 210 and on Race Track Road in Julington Creek run weekday happy hours, usually 3 to 6 p.m., with discounted house margaritas, draft beer and appetizers. Taco Tuesday pricing is separate and often lasts all day. Details change, so check the restaurant's social pages or call that week.

Question 4

Do Mexican restaurants in St. Augustine have vegetarian or gluten-free options?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Corn tortillas are naturally gluten-free, and bean, cheese, veggie and mushroom tacos are on most menus. Ask whether the beans are cooked with lard and whether the rice uses chicken stock if that matters. Flour tortillas, fried flautas and some sauces contain wheat. Taquerias are usually happy to make substitutions if you ask plainly.

Question 5

What is birria and where can I get it in St. Johns County?

Accepted Answer

Birria is slow-braised beef or goat in a chile broth, served as a stew or stuffed into tacos that are dipped in the consomme and griddled. Several taquerias along US 1, in Hastings and in the north county plazas sell birria tacos, usually 4 to 6 dollars each or 14 to 20 for a plate with consomme. Weekends are the surest days to find it.

Question 6

Can I get Mexican food catered for a party in St. Augustine?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Most Tex-Mex restaurants and many taquerias offer taco bars priced per person, typically 14 to 22 dollars with two proteins, rice, beans, tortillas and toppings, and fajita trays by the half or full pan. Give at least two days notice, more for weekends and graduation season in May. Ask whether delivery, setup and chafing dishes are included.
