St. Johns County eats in two gears. Downtown St. Augustine runs on visitors, so the historic district fills up by 6 p.m. on weekends, parking garages charge, and the good tables go to people who booked. Out in Nocatee, Julington Creek, Fruit Cove and World Golf Village, restaurants live in shopping centers and serve families who want to be in and out in an hour. Ponte Vedra Beach sits between the two, with higher prices and a dressier crowd near the ocean. Seafood is the local draw, and much of it is caught off Vilano, Crescent Beach and Matanzas. Expect lines during Nights of Lights (late November through January), spring break, and any weekend with a festival on Francis Field. If a place takes reservations, use them.
Decide on the neighborhood first
Downtown St. Augustine means paid parking and a walk, Nocatee and Julington Creek mean free lots and quicker service. Pick the area that fits the night, then pick the restaurant.
Check the posted inspection
Florida restaurants are inspected by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, and the results are public online. A recent clean report matters more than a decade-old review.
Look at the current menu, not the photos
Prices in this county moved a lot in the last few years. Read the menu the restaurant posts now, and note whether gratuity is added for groups, which is common downtown.
Ask about wait times honestly
Many popular St. Augustine spots use a text wait list instead of reservations. Call ahead on a Friday or Saturday and ask what the wait looks like at the time you plan to arrive.
Match the place to the group
A waterfront bar on A1A is great for two adults and rough with a toddler at 7 p.m. If you have kids or a large party, pick somewhere with a real lot and quick kitchen.
