This was our first visit back, since they re-opened. Even though the parking lot was packed, we were seated almost immediately. The updates make the place feel fresh and clean, while keeping that laid back, locals vibe. The food was fabulous! The Fried Green Tomatoes are definitely a new favorite. My husband always has to have the calamari too. We had the grilled shrimp plate and the Parmesan Baked Mahi (didn't get a pic because my husband had already dug in lol, but he said it was excellent). The drinks we tried this time were the Strawberry Coco Mojito (yes, it is as delish. and refreshing as it sounds) and Captains Orders. We ended up ordering the Butter Pecan Cheesecake to-go, because we were too stuffed ... but it just sounded too good to pass up ... and it was totally worth it! Great experience, and we will certainly be back again and again.
We really wanted to love it here however it pains me to say that the new whitey’s is way overhyped. The original was always delicious and in fact our family would be considered regulars over the years. Down to the details: Food: The shrimp lacked flavor and was over fried. The collard greens were good and had a nice kick. By all means necessary skip the macaroni and cheese. It was incredibly dry to the point no one at our table liked it including the kids. The taste was like buttered pasta in desperate search of actual cheese. The hush puppies sadly were also flavorless which with a small tweak could be corrected. However the sweat tea seemed to go over nicely with our group. Service: We were greeted right away upon entry. Even though we had a large party we were seated within 15 minutes which was perfect. No complaints at all on the service. Our waitress was very attentive and the staff working that day was plentiful. Prices: Sadly the reviews trending on this subject were spot on, overpriced and underwhelming for the quality of food provided.
Was not a good experience. The wait was one hour (6:13p-7:13p) Order taken at 7:15p Appetizers arrived at 7:49p Table entrees at 8:15p. In our two-hour experience the orders were; Blackened Grouper w Green beans (excellent!). Pick2 Catfish Filet & shrimp. Pick3 Catfish filet, shrimp & scallops. For both platters the shrimp was over breaded and over cooked to a dark brown. Too crunchy to enjoy. Likely bad fryer oil and over timed. Blackened Mahi Sandwich. Fish was grilled not blackened. The shredded sandwich lettuce was spoiled (brown). Two kids orders; Chicken Strips w Fries (ok), and Shrimp with Mac'nCheese. The Mac'n Cheese was dry throughout -with hard (overbaked) crusty pasta on top. Not edible. Our waitress identified some things that were not available or no longer on the menu. She was extremely apologetic (multiple times) for the food delays. This was a visibly chaotic night (7/3/26). We had high hopes with the good reviews and new ownership -but this was not your night.
Celebrated my friend’s birthday here and it was a lovely time! We arrived around 5:30 on. Tuesday. Parking spots were available and there was no wait. We sat on the back patio. The weather was perfect with a slight breeze from the water. Gator tail and seafood queso were the ordered appetizers, both were delicious. The queso was a large portion, with leftovers! Dinner included: salmon bowl, 1/2 burger, tuna bowl, and steak medallions. The salmon was great and was a thick portion. I only ate a small portion of rice and would have preferred extra vegetables. The sriracha aioli was perfect! The burger and tuna bowl received thumbs up. The medallions were said to be tender and delicious! The broccoli was a tad over cooked but nothing extreme. Our server, Zel, was attentive and full of laughter. Our drinks were never empty and she even offered extra tomatoes (inside joke). I will return! For those reading negative reviews, consider the time of the reviewers visit. Whitey’s is a long established restaurant in Clay County and extremely popular. If you go to any great restaurant during peak times, you will wait.
This is the Mac N Cheese…. This wraps up the place. The renovation is nice but the FOOD SUCKED. I grew up going here for good southern seafood dishes. You can tell the new owners don’t know anything about a southern fish camp. Now all the FOOD is all awful, VERY PLAIN, NOT even warm, and HEAVILY priced. The pick two platter they offer should be no more than 13$ MAX ( with how it tastes and how little the amount of food given). Yet a pick two platter resulted in 33$ with a drink ( for one person mind you) . TRULY disappointing. You are better off going to Chilis down the road for better taste and bang for your buck.
