Our guide was Patrick! He was amazing and he made this whole experience excellent! He throughly explained everything during the tour and he played his role as a guide expertly he was very entertaining and animated. I highly recommend going to this venue, it is worth it! I even went back for the haunted for the haunted tour there! Make the plans and go!
The Old Jail Museum was one of the most unexpectedly fun stops on our St. Augustine trip! From the street, the building doesn't even look like a jail — it's designed in an old Romanesque hotel style, which I later learned was intentional. Henry Flagler had it built back in 1891 and wanted it to blend in with the elegant hotels he was building nearby instead of looking like a scary prison. The moment the tour started, a costumed "deputy" greeted us and completely set the tone — equal parts funny and eerie. We walked through the women's cells, the men's cells, and finally the maximum-security section where the most dangerous inmates were once kept. Our guide shared story after story about real prisoners and about Sheriff Joe Perry, who apparently ran a very tight ship. Seeing the original chains, handcuffs, old prison uniforms, and even one of Florida's earliest fingerprinting kits made the whole place feel incredibly authentic rather than a typical tourist attraction. The tour runs about 30 minutes, which felt just right, and it's suitable for both kids and adults, though younger children might find some stories a little intense. Parking is free, and it's right next to the Old Town Trolley stop, so it fits perfectly into a bigger day of sightseeing. If you're visiting the nation's oldest city, this is a genuinely unique piece of history you shouldn't skip!
Cornelius was exceptionally well versed in his knowledge about the jail. His friendly, entertaining presentation was greatly appreciated! The jail overall was just an overload of interesting history! They did a great job and making it feel like you’re going back in time, each turn you take!
We had an amazing time touring the Old Jail in St. Augustine! Our guide, Louis (Lewis), the “trustee inmate,” absolutely made the experience. He was incredibly knowledgeable, super informative, and one of the funniest, most entertaining tour guides we’ve ever had. His storytelling, sense of humor, and interaction with the group brought the history to life. Without a doubt, this was one of the highlights of our trip to St. Augustine. We couldn’t stop laughing while still learning so much about the jail’s fascinating history. I highly recommend this tour to all of our family and friends. If you get the chance, make sure you see Louis—he’s definitely a character! 😂 We can’t say enough good things about the experience. Employees like Louis are a huge asset and deserve to be recognized and taken care of. Thank you for making our visit so memorable!
My wife and I visited St. Augustine for the first time and decided to visit the Old Jail based on the tour recommendations. We were pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed the experience! Our tour guide, Scarlett, who was the “sheriff in disguise” 😂, was truly amazing! She made the tour fun, interactive, and engaging while also sharing a great deal of knowledge about the history of the Old Jail and St. Augustine. We had a fantastic time and would highly recommend the Old Jail tour, especially if you get Scarlett as your guide! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
