The grounds are beautiful and serene. Far enough from downtown to be quiet for prayer as you walk. Wonderful spots for a rosary, either in the chapel or around the giant rosary, or even walking the grounds to pray. Lots make a pilgrimage here to pray to Our Lady of La Leche for their special intentions with pregnancy problems. There is also a small museum portion educating on the mission to St. Augustine and the first mass said in the USA. What made it more heavenly is as we prayed, we spotted a dolphin. 🐬 Would certainly come again.

This is just a beautiful area. Very peaceful. The grounds are gorgeous. There are gravestones dating to the 1700's. The shrines are exquisite and wonderfully crafted. This is well worth the visit, absolutely beautiful.
The National Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche is the oldest Marian shrine in the continental United States (dating back to around 1609–1670s). This 26-acre site along the Matanzas Bay is profoundly symbolic and historically significant, often referred to as "America's Most Sacred Acre" due to its role as the cradle of Catholicism in what is now the continental United States. The "Sacred Acre": This core area, near the Rustic Altar and Historic Chapel, is believed (via archaeological research) to be the exact spot of the 1565 Mass. It symbolizes the planting of the Catholic faith's "seed" in the New World, consecrated by that first Eucharistic celebration and later by the blood of martyrs. The grounds symbolize the birthplace of Catholicism in America—a place where faith took root through exploration, mission work, and devotion to Mary as mother and intercessor. There's a sense of peace, making it a living witness to over 460 years of continuous prayer, pilgrimage, and spiritual nourishment. The serene, garden-like setting along the water enhances this contemplative atmosphere.
Very peaceful and beautiful place. The gardens are lovely, and the chapel is quiet and inviting—you can sit, pray, and reflect. It truly feels like a corner of peace and serenity, away from the noise and crowds of downtown. They have a visitor book where you can register your visit, which is a nice touch. The large cross is very impressive and adds to the spiritual atmosphere.
We visited on a Monday during our trip and attended the noon Mass, which was beautiful. Afterward, we walked around the peaceful grounds and visited the Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche. We also stopped by the gift shop and purchased a few special items. It was a lovely and meaningful experience
