Fascinating. You can do self-guided or if more than one docent have a guided tour. Interpretative panels give an owner timeline history and there are many photographs. I found the Native American history for the area, "privateer" Drake and map gallery of interest. The old house is set up as the tavern downstairs and home upstairs. Many artifacts, too. The two docents were genuinely friendly and helpful.
I thought the Gonzalez-Alvarez (Oldest House in Florida) was pretty interesting. I only wish there was more to it. The oldest house itself wasn't that engaging and would have been better if there was an actual tour guide rather than a self-tour. Next to this is the museum in the main building, the history of surfing building, a floor with civil rights history within St. Augustine, and a building with maps. As mentioned, it was interesting to see many of these, but aside from the main building where the guides were, there wasn't a lot of context besides just browsing.
We LOVED this place! There is a no touch policy on the displays (totally understandable) so kids have to be watched closely, but TOTALLY worth it. This place is beautiful and it's so interesting. My 4 year old stayed enthralled through about 95% of it and that's rare for him. My 8 year old loved all of it and wanted to move in. It's beautiful and wasn't crowded when everything else was. The tour guide was very informative and was very nice! We'll be back and definitely recommend! ALSO, super cheap admission!!!
Linda, who was our tour guide, was awesome. i felt like I was getting a professional tour from a professor she knew much more than just the history of the house. I could spend hours just listening to her talk about the history of St. augastine, so informative.I highly recommend There is also a surf museum and political cartoon museum also lots too see
The complex includes a beautiful courtyard and different exhibits in multiple buildings. Very enjoyable tour led by knowledgeable and friendly guides. It amazes me how sometimes you pay so little for such enriching, entertaining experiences.
