What a great way to quickly and safely access a tidal swamp and be able to enjoy its fresh air and natural beauty! The boardwalk terminates at Durbin Creek which flows into the St.John's River. There's also a floating dock that's perfect to launch kayaks and canoes from.
So, the creek itself is stunningly beautiful. I went on a guided tour with Earth Kinship ecotours and had a blast. Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous trees and flowering plants and the earthy smell is amazing. There are some logs to maneuver around and over, but I've found the trick is to get some momentum and force and just slide over 'em. The only drawback is that the kayak launch itself is so far away from the parking lot, and even the lot itself is poorly designed. It's such a blissful little pocket in the travesty that has become of the surrounding area. But once you're on the creek itself.... Heaven. I was reminded of a line from a poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins, "God's Grandeur" (look it up!): "And for all this, nature is never spent; There lives the dearest freshness deep down things."
It’s such a great spot, but we kayaked for about 5 minutes and ran into so much vegetation blocking the rest of the way that we had to turn back around. Hopefully the path will be cleared soon so this can be enjoyed properly! The little bit we experienced was beautiful!
Beautiful spot to kayak. Spotted a couple of gators, one big one. Lots of birds, tortoises and other wildlife. Very peaceful even with a little traffic noise. A slice of paradise I'd say.
About a 1/4 mile in there was about 30 feet of thick lily’s and water plants we could not get through. We tried for about 1/2 an hour to break through. We ended up turning around and going up stream. Enjoyed the row but you have to pay attention to not get lost.
