My first time at cornbread bae this afternoon. Had heard about it on social media and am a cornbread lover so I had been meaning to try. The food was outstanding. I ordered the side bae plate with brisket and turkey, collards and mac. The mac and cheese was so flavorful with a variety of cheeses, the collards had the perfect amount of salt and the meats were both so tender and flavorful. What took me by surprise was the rice that came with this plate - I’m not sure what the hell is in it but it’s sooo flavorful and pairs so well with the meats. And DONT get me started on the cornbread - you will just have to try it for yourself. Be advised this is a takeout only spot, there aren’t tables.
Arrived at Cornbread Bae at 12:57 p.m., with the establishment opening at 1:00 p.m. We ordered the Risk It All and Brisket Bae plates along with a strawberry lemonade and a pineapple lemonade. The total came to $96. After a 32-minute wait, the food arrived lukewarm. The brisket was on the tougher side and mostly fat, while the turkey was moist and well-seasoned. The wings were just okay—very heavily seasoned with lemon pepper, which some people may like. The oxtails were thin but well-seasoned and tender. As for the sides, the yams were dry and little of the gooey syrup you’d expect from traditional candied yams. The macaroni and cheese was a cream not cheese consistency slightly salty, with a lots of garlic-salt. The greens and yellow rice were average—nothing memorable. Unfortunately, the cornbread, which you’d expect to be the highlight, tasted like a dressed-up Jiffy mix. It was fine, but far from a highlight considering it is the namesake. The lemonades were decent in flavor, but not mixed, there were lots of sugar grains coming up through the straw. Checkout the pictures (sandwich not included in the photos)does it look like $96 to you??? Overall, this was a disappointing experience. I’d rate it a 4 out of 10 and wouldn’t revisit.
Unfortunately the food was wayyy overpriced in comparison to the quality. The oxtails were dry and tough, cabbage was brown with a sugary taste then a BAM of hot Cajun Spices, almost like cayenne pepper sprinkle. Service was very kind and attentive. However for a simple “sampling” which was what I was looking for, just a tasting of a meat and vegetable cost me over $30. They ran out of or had no forks and other items such as napkins were unavailable. Wow! I learned my lesson. Tipping ahead of time was definitely a no go as well. I would have complained straight to management, but by the time I circled back? They were closed of course. Money down the drain!
If yall haven't had their oxtail then you're missing out!!! FANTASTIC flavor, falls right off the bone, that with the mac n cheese and you'll be in heaven 🤤
God blessed this city when he gave us the culinary talent behind Cornbread Bae. I drove all the way from the beaches and it was 100% worth it and will happily make the trip anytime I get a hankering for some amazing food made with love. And the prices were so reasonable, I couldn’t believe it. This is a diamond in the rough and Cornbread Bae deserves all of the love and patronage. Go now! (If they’re open) and don’t give em any hell if you miss out because he sold out for the day.
