I’ve now visited 5 de Mayo in downtown Jacksonville twice, and it has quickly become one of my favorite spots. The Atmosphere The restaurant itself is housed in a beautiful, historic building—I absolutely love that they’ve kept the original "Covington Company" floor tiles at the entrance! The interior has a great vibe that makes for a fantastic night out. The Experience • The Food: We’ve enjoyed Combo #4 and #7, as well as the Tacos de Asada, and everything was consistently delicious. The chips and salsa are a must-order (seriously addictive). • Vegan-Friendly: I’ve come here with vegan friends, and the staff was incredibly accommodating in helping us find great options for them, which isn't always easy to find at a traditional Mexican restaurant. • Drinks: The Margaritas are fantastic—definitely a highlight of both my trips. The Service The service has been awesome both times I’ve been in. The staff is friendly, attentive, and makes you feel right at home the moment you walk through those doors. If you're downtown and looking for consistent, high-quality Mexican food with a side of local history, this is the place to go. I’ll definitely be back!
went twice during FASRO week. the first time was during lunch hour with my husband and our child. we were seated pretty quickly and they did accommodate us since we had our baby’s stroller. I ordered three street tacos and horchata. the horchata was very milky for my liking so I didn’t drink all of it. the street tacos were delicious though! I ordered without hot sauce. my husband loved the food so much, we went back for dinner around 4:30 with three other friends and their spouses. our total number in our group was 9 people. the place was busy so we did ask if they can take us but if not, we had no issue going to another place. the lady that was looking at the seating chart insisted that they can take us and we were seated by the side door. we put our drink order in and it took roughly 45 minutes for only 4 of us to get our drinks and the remaining were waiting. we were all hungry and our waitress was attending other tables so we just decided to pay and leave to go eat somewhere else.
I ordered the taco (beef) & enchilada (one beef & one chicken) combo. I can understand chicken being dry sometimes but I'm not sure how they managed to make the ground beef dry as well. The good also completely lacked any hint of seasoning. Not sure what the drinks taste like but I assume that's why people come here because it's absolutely not the food.
Great food, amazing people will definitely eat there again. Some of the best bartenders and service I have ever had. Also very good pricing and cold beer
The waiter was nice to me but he did seem a little short with the guys that I was with lol. Not rude but like he was moreso tired. The food was great! We all enjoyed our meals. The fajita I ordered was pictured and labeled as "comes with beans, rice and salad" but the waiter said it didn't come with it. However, he did bring my salad at no extra cost. I would recommend this restaurant and will definitely return when I visit Jacksonville again. Thank you!
