I’ve been meaning to go here for forever. My goodness - shame on me for waiting so long. I did their Sunday ceviche and everything was perfection. Yes. You will have to wait. Please, please do NOT be like the people I saw complain about the wait. It’s very clear they bust their asses and deliver an incredible culinary experience in a small kitchen. They are going on the rotation!
Chancho King has a very social, neighborhood‑friendly vibe, especially with the relaxed outdoor seating area tucked behind the building. The interior is simple and unfussy, which fits the casual atmosphere. With chef‑owners who are James Beard finalists, expectations naturally run high, but after several visits with coworkers for lunch, the experience still hasn’t matched the level of hype. The biggest challenge remains the value, as portion sizes often feel small for the price. We’ve tried a variety of dishes and sandwiches, and while the menu is creative, not everything delivers on flavor. For example, I was told the chorizo would be spicy, but it tasted closer to a mild kielbasa. The pork sandwich has been the standout so far, though it’s essentially half a sub roll with plantain chips. Pros: • Outdoor Dining: Comfortable, partially shaded seating behind the building • Service: Friendly staff and an easygoing neighborhood feel • Variety: Menu developed by well‑regarded chef‑owners • Location: Convenient Murray Hill spot for a casual meet‑up • Best Dish Tried: The pork sandwich Cons: • Pricing: High for the portion sizes (e.g., three chicken legs at $23) • Expectations: Experience doesn’t fully align with the restaurant’s reputation • Consistency: Several dishes feel more modest than expected Overall, Chancho King is a pleasant place to unwind, but the pricing‑to‑portion balance left me wanting more.
Their sandwiches are flat out divine. Right amount of sauce, good amount of onions (for me), and the pan de yuca had the perfect texture. Would definitely come back for a quick bite!
If you visit Jacksonville on a weekend and don’t go to chancho king, you are missing out. Their regular menu is phenomenal, but Friday nights and Sundays are the real stars. “Late night” (every Friday evening) features a special menu that’s different every week. There is a DJ and lots of kind people, a great place to go if you are looking for a chill party with great food to start your weekend. Sundays feature a special menu filled with seafood. Chancho has the BEST CEVICHE IN JACKSONVILLE. And you can customize your ceviche! Sundays are also very family friendly. Jacksonville is so lucky to have this restaurant. Do yourself a favor and check it.
Chancho King isn't just an incredible restaurant for Ecuadorian cuisine — it's a true neighborhood gem that stands out even in Jacksonville's diverse culinary landscape. This family-owned establishment perfectly captures the essence of what makes Ecuadorian food so special: simple preparations that showcase exceptional ingredients and masterful flavor combinations. Every dish that comes out of their kitchen demonstrates genuine craftsmanship. The flavors are clean, authentic, and beautifully balanced, proving that great cooking doesn't need to be complicated—it just needs to be done with skill and care. From perfectly seasoned meats to vibrant sauces and traditional preparations, each plate tells a story of culinary tradition executed with precision. What truly sets Chancho King apart, however, is the warmth of the owners. Their genuine friendliness and welcoming spirit make every visit feel like you're being invited into their home. They're passionate about sharing their culture through food, and it shows in every interaction and every lovingly prepared dish. In a city full of dining options, Chancho King offers something genuinely special: authentic Ecuadorian cuisine prepared with heart, served by people who truly care about their guests' experience. Whether you're already familiar with Ecuadorian food or looking to try something new, this restaurant deserves a spot at the top of your list.
