This museum is FREE and has been open since 2003 thanks to Mrs. Gwendolyn Duncan and many others. They had to raise the money because they don’t get the grant money like most museums. They also have a beautiful vegetable but mostly flower garden behind the museum. One of the ladies who was instrumental in establishing museum served Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at her home. She would have visitors sign her Bible and the pages with his signature are in his museum. The museum is the home of a black in St. Augustine; Dr. Robert Hayling. Known as the "father" of St. Augustine's Civil Rights movement, he worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the SCLC to desegregate the city. Dr. Hayling faced severe violence for his advocacy, including being beaten at a Ku Klux Klan rally and having his home shot up, but his efforts were key to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. As I walked by the museum I saw Mr. Irwin Brunson who maintains the garden which is simply beautiful. There is a bench and table with umbrella. I sat in the garden with Mr. Brunson for at least an hour talking. He was one of the first black students to integrate the school. He is also an artist and has a book out about his experience with integrating the school. There is just a wealth of information at this museum!!! If you truly want to know the history of blacks in St. Augustine this is where you need to go!! They have a 25 minute film that explains the history of the museum, the exhibits and those who played a major part in the civil rights movement. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did visit this city and meet with prominent black leaders. St. Augustine was where the hotel manager poured acid in swimming pool filled with blacks. They have the sign for the hotel in this museum. There is so much in this museum and I highly recommend touring!! You may have the opportunity to meet Mr. Brunson who has a wealth of history within…

I had a wonderful time at the Accord civil rights museum as they celebrated Mrs. Cora Tyson's birthday and she is living history and over 102 years old and still she is "sharp as a tac" and beautiful. Thank you Accord and Mrs. Tyson for reminding us as a city and nation just how far we've come.
This was an amazing experience. Excited to be a part of history. Avis l Coast One Tours LLC
If you're going to be in St Augustine and have any interest in Civil Rights history, this is not to be missed. The amount of information and history contained within this small museum was amazing. We never realized there had been so much civil rights activity and history in St Augustine. Be sure to see the video before looking at all the items on display, including a bible signed by Dr Martin Luther King Jr. When we arrived we were the only ones there, and the folks there were very friendly and knowledgeable and provided information even beyond what was shown in the displays. The most amazing fact: that local white residents (including KKK members) would sit in an integrated waiting room to have their dental work done by a black dentist. Definitely worth your time.
During my recent visit to St. Augustine, I happened to walk past this museum and decided to go in. I am so glad I did. The tour begins with a short film that explains the history of the building and its place in the civil rights movement - eye opening and very informative. If you do nothing but watch the video, your time will have been well spent. The collection of items is not very large, but the items are very meaningful. One can see everything in about thirty minutes. Moreover, it is the building itself that is incredibly significant - the first integrated dental office in Florida and the place where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Andrew Young, and a host of other civil rights leaders met and planned the civil rights movement. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was formulated in that building. The people running the museum grew up in the civil rights movement and their personal recollections and stories are worth the visit. A great find!
