Salons & Barbers in St. Johns, FL

How to choose a hair salon & barber in St. Johns

1. Find a stylist, not just a salon

Many of the best stylists in Ponte Vedra, Nocatee, and St. Augustine work in suites or rent a booth, and their reputation is personal. Look at their own social media for recent work on hair like yours. Ask whether the stylist specializes in color, cutting, curly hair, or extensions; very few are great at all of them.

2. Check for the Florida license

Cosmetologists, barbers, and hair specialists must be licensed by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation and the license must be displayed at the station. The salon itself also needs an establishment license. You can look up any license online. This matters most for chemical services where a bad job means breakage.

3. Book a consultation for major color or smoothing

Blonding, color correction, keratin, and extensions are priced by the hour or by how much product and time your hair needs. A 15 minute consultation lets the stylist look at your hair, explain what is realistic, and give you a price range. Walking in cold for a big change is how people end up with a 500 dollar surprise.

4. Ask about humidity and sun strategy

A stylist who lives here will talk about brassiness from salt water and pool chlorine, toners and glosses between appointments, UV protection for color, and which smoothing treatments hold up from June to September. If the advice sounds like it came from a magazine in Ohio, keep looking.

5. Understand the cancellation and tipping norms

Most salons and independent stylists in the county require a card on file and charge 50 to 100 percent for no-shows or cancellations inside 24 to 48 hours. Tipping 18 to 20 percent is standard. If a stylist owns the suite, tipping is still customary locally, though some decline it.
