Question 1

How much does a lawyer cost in St. Augustine?

Accepted Answer

Hourly rates in St. Johns County in 2026 run roughly 250 to 450 dollars for most attorneys, higher for board-certified specialists and senior partners at Ponte Vedra and Jacksonville firms. Flat fees are common for wills, simple estate plans, uncontested divorces, closings and misdemeanor defense. Injury cases are almost always contingency, with no fee unless you recover.

Question 2

Do I need a lawyer for a real estate closing in Florida?

Accepted Answer

Florida does not require one, and many closings are handled by title companies. Attorney-run closings are common in Northeast Florida and cost about the same, since the attorney acts as the title agent. A lawyer is worth it for new construction contracts, for-sale-by-owner deals, estate sales and anything involving a dispute over the survey, HOA or seller disclosures.

Question 3

How long do I have to file a personal injury claim in Florida?

Accepted Answer

For most negligence cases, including car crashes, Florida's statute of limitations is two years from the date of injury for incidents after March 24, 2023. Older claims and other kinds of cases have different deadlines, and claims against government bodies require earlier written notice. Talk to an attorney well before the deadline, because evidence and witnesses fade fast.

Question 4

Where is the St. Johns County courthouse?

Accepted Answer

The Richard O. Watson Judicial Center is at 4010 Lewis Speedway in St. Augustine, just off US 1 north of downtown. It houses the circuit and county courts, the clerk's office and traffic court. The clerk's self-help resources and online records are at the St. Johns County Clerk of Court website, which is where most case documents and dockets are searched.

Question 5

How do I find a free or low-cost lawyer in St. Johns County?

Accepted Answer

The Florida Bar Lawyer Referral Service offers a low-fee first consultation. Jacksonville Area Legal Aid serves St. Johns County residents who qualify by income on housing, family, consumer and benefits matters. The courthouse self-help center can explain forms but not give advice. Many private attorneys also offer a free first meeting on injury, family and estate matters.

Question 6

What does board certified mean for a Florida lawyer?

Accepted Answer

Board certification is The Florida Bar's recognition that a lawyer has passed an exam, met experience requirements and been reviewed by peers in a specific field such as real estate, marital and family law, criminal trial or wills, trusts and estates. Only a small share of Florida lawyers hold it. It is a meaningful signal, though plenty of excellent lawyers are not certified.
