St. Johns County has one of the highest household incomes in Florida and a large population of retirees and near-retirees, so financial advisors are thick on the ground in Ponte Vedra Beach, along A1A, in Nocatee and around World Golf Village. The work here is mostly retirement income planning, rolling over 401(k)s from careers elsewhere, managing the proceeds of a home sale up north, Social Security timing, and coordinating with estate attorneys and CPAs. The county also has plenty of younger professionals in Julington Creek and Fruit Cove who need help with equity compensation, college savings and buying a first home in a pricey market. The word advisor is not regulated by itself. What matters is whether the person is a fiduciary, how they are paid, and what their Form ADV or FINRA BrokerCheck record shows.
Ask if they are a fiduciary at all times
Registered investment advisers owe you a fiduciary duty. Brokers and insurance agents may not, or only sometimes. Ask the question directly and get the answer in writing.
Understand how they get paid
Fee-only advisors charge a percentage of assets, a flat fee or hourly and take no commissions. Fee-based and commission advisors earn from products they sell. Neither is automatically bad, but you need to know which one you are talking to.
Check the public record
Look up the firm's Form ADV on the SEC's adviser search site and the individual on FINRA BrokerCheck. Both show disclosures, complaints and how the firm is paid. Takes five minutes.
Look for the right credential
CFP is the broad planning credential, CFA is investment analysis, CPA/PFS is tax-centered planning. For retirement income in St. Johns County, a CFP with retiree clients is the usual fit.
Ask what you get beyond investments
Good planning includes Social Security timing, Roth conversions, tax-aware withdrawals, insurance review and coordination with your attorney and CPA. If the pitch is only about returns, keep looking.
