Great experience at VooSwar because of the fun vibes, friendly staff and super affordable, yummy food. We visited on Wednesday - wing night. $10 for 10 wings and fries. I had mine breaded with garlic parm and we also tried naked with Cajun ranch. Both were delicious and I’d eat either again; it’s nice they offered two cooking styles and both wing variations were fresh and hot. The generous portion of fries reminded my Aussie bf of legit chips - he described them as crispy outside with a mashed-potato-like middles. I prefer a thinner fry, but these were well seasoned and yummy. Louis, the super friendly proprietor, was playing whatever tunes patrons wanted and ensured we had a great meal and a good time. Louis shared in addition to 10 for $10 Wednesday wing nights, they have a chicken sandwich special on Tuesday and pork chop special on Thursday. Every Friday and Saturday they have live music. Two additional pluses that I appreciate were the under-bar-hooks for purses and the generous charging station on the bar - I needed to add some battery and they accommodated for free! VooSwar also had 3 pool tables, a ping pong table and TouchTunes. You can really have a fun night here. Vooswar has been around since 1963!!! (Louis’ dad opened the place) If you’re visiting the beach, Hanna park, or seeing friends around Mayport, VooSwar is a great hang where your wallet and stomach will thank you! We’ll definitely be back.
This place has so much history in the mayport area. I could type a whole article of it being a safe haven for Black sailors and citizens during segregation back in 1963, or how its name comes from the frech word voussoir because it represents the strongest stone in an arch, symbolizing resilience and community support. Still ran by the Davis family today. Now for the fun stuff. WINGS WINGS WINGS!!! The cajun dry rub, lemon pepper, and garlic parm. All i can say was epic. Same with the cheese sticks. Service was fast and friendly. It was my first time being there, and certainty not my last.
Dive bar and the oldest owned african american bar in Florida. Still in the amazing family :) Good pool tables too!! We do pool league nights here wednesdays.
★★★★★ New to the Jacksonville area, and what do I do when I arrive somewhere new? I find out whose land I’m on, where the community gathers, where the locals eat, and where the history lives. The locals told me Voo Swar was a “do not miss”—and baby, they were right. But Voo Swar is more than a restaurant and lounge. This is a historic Black-owned, family-built gathering place in the Atlantic Beach/Mayport community. Earnest “Mr. E” Davis created this space during a time when Black sailors coming off the ships at Mayport were not welcomed or served elsewhere. So he built somewhere they could come, eat, drink, dance, gather, and belong. Now THAT is a SPOT. A place created because community deserved a place to be welcomed. A place that survived. A place still feeding people generations later. And then came the pork chop sandwich!!! 😮💨🔥 Hot, seasoned, flavorful, filling—and exactly the kind of food that makes you understand why people keep coming back. The drinks were drinking 🍹, the food was good, and the atmosphere felt lived-in, local, relaxed, and real. I came looking for a neighborhood recommendation and found history, legacy, family, community—and a pork chop sandwich worth talking about. When I am new to an area, I do not only want the polished tourist recommendations. I want to know where the community has gathered, celebrated, eaten, laughed, danced, and made room for one another. Voo Swar is one of those places. Thank you to the locals who told me, “Do not miss Voo Swar.” You understood the assignment. Come hungry. Order the pork chop sandwich. Get a drink. Look around. Talk to the people. And understand that you are not simply eating at a restaurant—you are visiting a piece of Black history that is still alive, still serving, and still bringing people together. I will be back. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ……And the name has meaning. Voo Swar comes from voussoir, the wedge-shaped stone used to hold an arch together—the keystone, the strongest point. That is almost a perfect description of what the restaurant became for the community.
Went here for a Christmas party. Gave all the guest something to do! Pool tables and served lunch. Consisted of pulled smoked turkey, chicken wings, chicken tenders, fried shrimp and fries with salad. Food was very good! Staff was super friendly. Ample sitting areas in front and back of area with easy parking.
