We were visiting from out of town and found this to be a very friendly fellowship. They currently do not have a minister and the services are lay-led and they did an excellent job. Pianist is wonderful.
This is a very warm and welcoming non-dogmatic community, open to people from all walks of life and all beliefs. I was delighted to find a community with an ethos of tolerance, acceptance, justice and compassion. The lay-led services always provide food for thought, and the music program is very enjoyable. Conversation and discussion are encouraged during and after service, and there are also many programs that serve others and enhance the local area. The children's program also offers something for all ages.
I've been a member of this Fellowship since moving to St. Augustine 6 years ago, and I'm delighted I found it! Members can espouse any belief that is not dogmatic or harmful to others. There is currently no minister, so it's lay led. Members find knowledgeable speakers from all walks of life, which makes each service interesting and unique. Before the speaker is introduced, children leave the sanctuary to participate in a special educational program. After the service, people assemble in our social hall to enjoy the 3 Cs: conversation, coffee and cookies. A wonderful way to meet like-minded people and enjoy their company. Members also take active roles in the community, such as preparing meals for the homeless and working in the St. Johns Food Pantry.
Six years ago, I heard about the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of SA and I decided to check it out. I'm glad I did. The UUs have a faith-based tradition but it does not adhere to any given dogma. Instead it asks each members to treat all kindly, and invites lessons and learning from any tradition that respects life and liberty. I've heard some great talks there - provocative, reassuring, informed and though I haven't always agreed with the presenter, I felt it was worthwhile to listen and attend. There is a children/youth program that introduces the great questions in a friendly and affirmative way. It's not a place where you go to have your prejudices and your worst fears magnified. It's a friendly place that will encourage you to think and make up your mind about what you think - about not only current events but life's great questions. Thankfully, it's not about politics. Though it is about getting along with others, understanding history and philosophical thought. If you'd like to learn and share, it's a great place to come on Sunday. I should add that the Fellowship serves our local community with direct participation as well as financial support for over 15 programs that help those in need, from children to the homeless. I'm proud and pleased to be part of it.
Nice group of people, good music and there's always a different theme each Sunday. If you're looking for a church or want to listen to the same preacher every week this isn't the place for you. If you want to be exposed to diverse voices this may be a good fit for you.
