  Posting for a young family member, who visited her primary care doctor today (and for only the second visit without her parents.) She left feeling flustered and upset due to the front desk staff and front desk supervisor. A complaint has been filed with an UF patient advocate. This person encountered an unexpected $30.00 co-pay (for a follow up appt), and explained to the front desk receptionist that she did not have payment with her. Instead of offering to BILL FOR THE CO-PAY (standard! I go to the same doctor!), she had to resort to using Venmo (side note-her high school graduation money - she is young.) When I called to find out why this patient was upset and embarrassed while sitting in their waiting room after check in, the staff member said my family member "didn't ask to be billed for the co-pay". I spoke to the supervisor, who was dismissive, condescending, and absurd in his responses. He offered that "she didn't look upset" and "maybe you have a lot more going on than this due to graduation" and 'it's just policy''. The supervisor never once stated that co-pays can be and are often billed later. This same supervisor happened to be at the front desk and witnessed her check in, but he or the receptionist didn't offer this simple, polite and respectful option to a young and flustered patient: "We can bill you for the co-pay, Miss." After the front desk supervisor hung up with me, he and the staff talked openly about me at the front desk, while my family member was still sitting in their waiting room. Family and I will all be moving our primary care to a different office, because a professional and caring staff is important to us.
