I was a patient of Dr. Mellin Sanchez at UF Health Pediatric Multispecialty Center and was disappointed with my experience regarding communication, documentation, and continuity of care. During treatment, a test was ordered that I did not fully understand the purpose of based on my documented medical conditions. My understanding was that the testing was intended to evaluate aspects of my metabolism, including how my body processes certain macronutrients. Although I expressed concerns about the relevance of the specific test being ordered, it was performed. Later, when I spoke with the organization about the testing, I was informed that the test performed was not intended for those specific metabolic concerns and that there were separate tests used for metabolic-related evaluation. Despite this, I did not have a discussion with Dr. Sanchez about the test results, and I did not receive a direct review of the findings or their relevance to my care and treatment from her. I also noticed diagnostic codes submitted to my insurance that did not appear to reflect the conditions we had discussed during my care. This created confusion and concern about how my medical history was being documented and how it could affect future treatment. I raised these concerns with the office and received responses from nursing staff; however, I did not feel that my questions were fully addressed, and my concerns were not resolved before communication stopped. A follow-up appointment was scheduled several months later to discuss these issues, but it was canceled exactly one week before the appointment date. Afterward, I received no communication regarding rescheduling or continuing care. When I contacted the office seeking guidance, I was informed that I could no longer be seen there and that they could not help me further. When I attempted to transfer to the Gainesville office within the same organization, despite the long drive, I was informed that they could not accept me as a patient. As a result, I was left without ongoing genetic care. I was informed by patient advocacy that her practice operated separately from the UF Health Jacksonville site, despite being located there, which limited my ability to seek assistance through UF Health patient advocacy channels, and I instead had to address my concerns through her office itself and its management. At the time, I felt that I experienced communication from the office staff that was dismissive, and I did not feel there was a clear or independent avenue through which my concerns could be reviewed and addressed. This experience took place a few years ago, but the impact stayed with me. Being left without specialty care and without continued treatment was extremely distressing. It has taken me a long time to feel comfortable sharing my experience publicly. My concerns are primarily about communication, documentation accuracy, and continuity of care. I hope the practice reviews these processes so that other patients do not encounter similar difficulties.

The dr was great the receptionist was not friendly at all. She acted like she didn't want to be there nor had the customer service mindset of being there for the patients and families. Not to mention she sign the hipaa forms before giving them to me. (Huge red flag especially when working with PHI) also they never gave me any information on how to create my sons account with him.
PLEASE PLEASE do not go to this practice. This is the most dishonest billing I have ever seen in all my life. They even sent me to collections for a bill that was still being resolved with insurance. When we made an initial consultation, we were told it would be with Dr. Trapane. Instead, we were scheduled with a Nurse Practioner and a Dietician (who was completely unnecessary). The meeting was in no way helpful as they talked most of the time and it was nothing we hadn’t heard before. The appointment lasted for 60 minutes. We have a time stamp on our phones of having taken pictures of our son before and after the appointment proving this. Instead, they billed us for over 2 and a half hours and billed us for every 15 minutes exceeding a “normal” consult time. They also billed us at a level 5, which according to our insurance company, is reserved for an emergency visit only. Our insurance had to get involved and they refused to comply and I learned this after I got a letter in the mail from a collections agency. I never received a single phone call letting me know they weren’t willing to comply or giving me the opportunity to go ahead and pay the bill. I am disgusted by the dishonesty and absolutely will never be back to this practice again. Please go elsewhere.
We’ve seen two pediatric nephrologists, both were great. Their PA was great. Every receptionist I’ve engaged with has been friendly, welcoming, and helpful.
The staff is very friendly. It does seem hard to get people to return calls or messages. I usually go in person if I have to communicate with some one because the wait time can be more than a week for people to return a message.
