I attended this parish briefly after not planning to attend a church or even stay in Jacksonville at the twilight of my tenure of work. I'll say I never liked anything about Jacksonville. The "why" is irrelevant, I'm sure if you came to Jax from somewhere else you very likely know what I am talking about. I planned to leave as soon as I had the opportunity to. The Lord had other plans, and details are irrelevant, but the TL;DR is that the Holy Spirit brought me to this parish. I arrived following multiple deaths of family members and close friends who were being slaughtered in pointless wars and genocides throughout the world. The community, the people, and Father Nick made it extremely hard for me to leave as I had initially planned. I have since left, but I'll never forget this church, and if you are like I was and are a transfer to Jax and miserable, please go to this Parish. You will find an amazing community and beautiful people.
First time visitors. Our priest, Fr Gerard from Kingsbay Naval Station arranged a tour of St John the Devine with Fr. Andrew Honore. Father gave genously of his time to have a discussion of the differences between our catholic tradition and their Orthodox practices. It was a fascinating adventure. #catholic #church #fellowship #field trip
A few years ago devistating states of events happened with a protestant church and I physically get so afraid when I try to go to a protestant service, I almost gave up on church as a whole. My friend's introduced me to the Orthodox Church and then I recently moved here. I've tried different churchs, no luck. I stopped by this church, it's beautiful, I felt like I found my home but quickly things turned. The priest started talking about politics and quite literally said "If you believe in more than two genders, your going (and points to the ground obviously referring to hell)." Who did this message touch? Who did this message help? Who did this message hurt? Because the sentiment hurt me, deeply. I'm struggling properly loving my neighbors, having faith in God, my anger, my frustration, my burnout, my humility and I feel like these are the true struggles of many Christians. I've haven't been back to church in months and I'm struggling.
A true gem in Jacksonville. St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church is a spiritual treasure. From the moment my family and I walked through the doors, we were welcomed with warmth, love, and genuine hospitality. The church community is filled with grace-filled, kindhearted people who immediately made us feel like family. Father Nick is a true spiritual father—humble, prayerful, and deeply pastoral. He takes the time to listen, to meet with you personally, and to pray with sincerity and care. His leadership reflects the heart of Christ. The presence of the Holy Spirit is palpable in every service. The beauty of the building itself is stunning, but what truly sets this church apart is the sacredness of its worship and the depth of its faith. I cannot speak highly enough of this parish, this priest, these people, and the richness of the Orthodox faith. Glory to God for St. John the Divine.
We attended St Johns last Sunday for the first time! It was a joy to be there and to participate in the service. Father Nick is amazingly open and transparent - you can hear the Holy Spirit speaking through him! The icons just completed in the church are magnificent and are so powerful they take your breath away! It was our intention to return this week, but the flu seems to have gotten ahold of us and we don't wish to expose others. We will try to figure out how to listen to the service live online. While never the same as being there it is none-the-less a way to participate. I hope we can go back to the sanctuary next Sunday. God bless all gathered there. God bless Father Nick and all others participating as leaders, God bless the changers and choir, and the ministries!
