As.a child I lived some 25 miles from St.Ambrose, the church. the mother church St. Ambrose and it’s smaller Parish church Which my family attended was “Our Lady of Good Council” Located in Bakersville Florida. the Small church only seated around 70 people and this church was nearly identical to St. Ambrose except the size Both. built Father Stephen Langlade, a French missionary and skilled carpenter, built the first St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Elkton, FL, in 1875. He served as both the architect and contractor for the wooden structure, with parishioners providing labor to establish the rural mission in the Moccasin Branch. Since cars were few the priest took a horse to say mass in Bakersville. And before the church Fr. Alan glade would say mad in a small chapel st my father family home in Bakersville, I have good memories of going to Saint Ambrose In junior high every week and before, for Catechism held in the school house of St.Ambrose. there was 2 story rectory built on the property where some 15 Nuns from the Sisters of Saint Joseph resided. And also when in grammar school the Nuns would pick us up at school At Mill Creek Elementary in a old topless jeep that some parishioners donated to them. Needless to say it was usually a ruff ride. And when it rained we all got wet and sometimes stuck since the roads then were all dirt. And i loved those days. By the way my grate-grate-grate grandfather Grandpa Bartolo Weedman named Moccasin Creek. there by the church a branch of water now called Moccasin Branch that runs through the church property. The story goes when he fell off his horse crossing the creek, and stated this dam creek Moccasin Creek. Which i heard stated at one of the St Ambrose’s Yearly Fairs by a known St. John’s County Story Teller. If you go to the church all the locals family’s that are buried in the cemetery You will see a complete row Of 13 + of my grandparents, and family members, oh and there was a nun a Aunt Jane Weedman. And on my Mothers side The Pacetti’s are in the “Out Lady of Good Counsel” Cemetery in Mill Creek Fl. now mainly know today as the World Golf Village.area. Very sorry i don’t have a photo to share. Of those days. But all the local people before and from that area came here in 1768 to work on Then Governor Turnbull of Florida But that’s another story. I would like to say how grateful i am to have such a rich heritage. You can find these family stories online at Many Locations.. I’m sure I could write a very large book on my family and just may one day. Happy Easter and good memories to all.
Beautiful grounds. Church, meditation area and outdoor pavilion on site. Gorgeous tree canopy over the entire area.
My husband and I attended the spring fair this past weekend. We had a wonderful time! Good food, affordable prices for families to enjoy. Face painting for children and the young at heart. Delightful choice of live music for all ages. Adults and kids dancing to great music. This fair was very well thought through by hard working members. We had the opportunity to hop onto the golf cart to get back to our vehicle. The gentleman was so pleasant when he drove us back. It was a big crowd in attendance but no one was "bumping" onto each other.
Absolutely beautiful Catholic church nestled in a wooded area surrounded by farms. But much more than that, it's a place of welcome and peace, a place of holiness that feels like home.
