Weather was great and the trails were good to walk on now that the pollen has slowed a bit. The parking area finally has blacktop road and there is a convenient bathroom with maps. The state forest maps for this appear use different color lines but the way the trails are, the map is like spaghetti in this area. They really need to make one zoomed in for this smaller area to make it easier to follow. The pink and yellow trail and Longleaf Pine Conn left us totally confused and the map did not help at all. The pink markers seem to stop there (if you see this… go straight ahead). We just followed the horse path back but that’s a bit tough to walk on. Regardless- it’s nice and makes for some great pictures. Was neat with F-22’s from Cecil doing some maneuvers overhead also.
I’m hesitant to review this, because it’s such a beautiful area I don’t want it packed with people. One of the most diverse set of discrete ecosystems in NE Florida. Great hiking trails, a mix of riparian habitats, longleaf pine flat woods, oak hammocks, hardwood bays, cypress domes, etc. One of the best places to see Fox-Squirrels, in almost all coat color variations, obviously deer, turkey, hogs (though I’ve yet to see any here in person). Just beautiful.
Great trail system for a hike. No bikes. There is a lot of elevation change (for the Jacksonville area) but the Sandy Creek trail has less steep elevation changes than the Pioneer trail. Very "Florida" lots of brush, fun trees, random flowers, butterflies, dragonflies and wildlife. You can see thru the treelines so if your pay attention theres deer everywhere. Saw several other groups of hikers. From the parking to around and back to parking, the SandRidge trail is 7.1 miles in total. There are bathrooms at the parking lot as well as half way thru the trail.
My second favorite spot to hike. There’s a couple trails to pick from, each beautiful and different distances. Spent a whole day out here, so much room for activities. Two entrances to choose from. Anybody who comes will have a good time for sure, enjoy.
This is a great place to hike and trail ride on horses. Place is huge. We rode our horses to creek across from Indian Ford and then went north along the creeks to the yellow trail. Did about 13 miles. Beautiful
