  I was going to be a self-pay patient for a hernia surgery. Part of the process was to apply for financial assistance. I began it late in the process and the nice lady, Mary in that department was super. I couldn't get her all the necessary documents in time because she was going to be on vacation beginning 05/25/26. My surgery was scheduled on the 27th. I politely told Mary that I was seeking other avenues and had to cancel. The surgeon's office (Christina) called and told me the hospital cancelled it on 05/26/26. I told her I actually cancelled although I may have used the improper channels. I called the next morning about my deposit that I made to the surgeon, over a thousand dollars because I could use it where I am actually getting it done. Her demeanor instantly changed. She told me it would come in a paper check and up to 15 business days. Here's where she chapped my hide, in a scolding voice she told me it would be a $75 dollar fee for me not calling her to cancel. I had sensed it more about money than me and she revealed it at this time. This "professional" went on to say that because of me someone else could have been using the operation room. I didn't know I was an operation scheduler. Anyway, I told her it was never told to me how to properly cancel because in the beginning that wasn't an option. She then went used car salesman on me and stated that it was in all that paperwork I signed in an aggressive tone. I so appalled I told her if her money hungry office wants to take $75 from a patient who is not only suffering but was struggling to pay for a $30,000 then take it and stick it where the sun doesn't shine. She hung up. I am sure now that she will take her sweet time to refund my money minus the $75 to try to inflict more pain on me. In summary, it was more about the money than healthcare which is truly a shame. I donated a kidney at Mayo 6 years ago and the experience was totally opposite. If you can go to Mayo and experience true professional from the parking lot attendants to the medical staff.
