We love Neptune Park! FIAA takes such good care of it and keeps it clean!
This place is a family friendly baseball field
FYI for those that don't know....this new park is named "Neptune Park" in honor of the Naval crew of a P2V2 Neptune aircraft that crashed on or near this park on June 14, 1951. There were 7 fatalities and 2 survivors. The crew members were mostly WWII veterans who had been reactivated for the Korean War and were on a local training flight. They developed a fire in flight and attempted to make an emergency landing on the former WWII era training field that existed on Fleming island. They were unsuccessful. My research indicates the plane came to a final rest just west of the pond at the end of the parking lot. For more information, email me at rickm.howard@gmail.com if interested.
Earlier in the day, before heading to Neptune Park for our granddaughter's softball game, our son sent us a ClayToday newspaper article on the naming of the park, which comes from the 1951 crash of a Navy Orion aircraft where the park now is.
