We truly can’t put into words how grateful my husband and I are for Mandarin Reading Clinic. In just two sessions, our daughter’s confidence with reading had doubled. Since attending consistently each week, she has developed a genuine love for reading—something that had previously been a major source of stress and anxiety for her. The growth we have seen in both her confidence and overall reading ability has been remarkable and honestly difficult to measure. We are beyond thankful for the support, encouragement, and positive impact the clinic has had on her learning journey.
I was referred to this clinic because my child was having difficulty with reading. The staff were kind and welcoming, but our experience ultimately raised serious concerns. The evaluation lasted about an hour, and afterward I was told my child had dyslexia and severe ADHD. The clinician even mentioned that her own children had these conditions and said it was obvious that mine did as well. This made me feel that her personal experiences may have influenced her objectivity in assessing my child. Feeling uneasy, I sought both second and third opinions. I later learned that the professionals at this clinic are speech pathologists, not reading interventionists or medical diagnosticians. After consulting two qualified reading specialists and completing a comprehensive evaluation with a psychologist, I was told my child does not have dyslexia or severe ADHD. Since then, my child has been working with a reading specialist, has made rapid progress, and is now reading at grade level. I’m not saying this clinic can’t be helpful for reading support, but I strongly recommend seeking at least a second opinion if they provide a medical diagnosis. In our case, the diagnosis given was not accurate, and it caused unnecessary stress and worry. UPDATE (in response to the clinic’s reply): There was no miscommunication. The clinician clearly diagnosed my child, and at no point was I advised to seek further testing or informed of any limitations in their ability to make a formal diagnosis. I was also given specific recommendations for session frequency and associated costs. While I appreciate the response, the deflection and lack of accountability remain concerning.
They are all very nice and seem to be okay, but I would recommend that since they are working on language skills that they inform their instructors that saying things improperly are setting bad examples. For example: "He did good" should be "he did well". Or when they say "I wanted to see he is at" that is incorrect. It is poor English to end with a preposition. All their instructors need to have this pointed out since we've heard several say similar things.
I was concerned about my son's reading ability and had him formally assessed at Mandarin Reading Clinic at the end of his 3rd grade year of school. He tested 2 grade levels below where he should be, although he was getting and "A" in his reading class at school. He worked with a Speech Therapist one time per week throughout the summer for 17 total sessions. He improved by two grade levels over the summer months and is now reading and testing at his grade level. As a parent, it is rewarding to see your child enjoy reading. Before his assessment today, my son said to me "Mom, thank you for taking me to the reading clinic. I really do appreciate it". He scored the highest grade in his reading class for the last two quizzes. He now has confidence in his reading. Thank you to the wonderful speech therapists who worked with my son. I truly thank you and wouldn't have been able to help him succeed like you all did!
I just have to sing the praises of this very special group. Sarah and Lynda were so welcoming and understanding from my very first phone call to them seeking help for my son. He had already been tested, diagnosed and had an IEP written thru his school in NH 3 years prior but after moving to Florida was struggling again. After testing him at MRC it was determined he was a year behind in his reading levels. Thru the programs at Mandarin Reading Clinic he is now (7 months later) reading a full year above his grade level and in what feels like record time. He shows a confidence and ease when doing his work now that we have not ever seen from him. While my son had to do the work to get where he is, it wouldn't have been possible without the help of all the special ladies that worked with him every week to get him here. I called many tutors and private schools before I found Mandarin Reading Clinic, I would highly recommend giving them a call if your child is struggling in school.
