Attended the Wine and Wills event in February with Latterell Law and found Angel's approach to estate planning a breath of fresh air. Her compassionate and ethical treatment of each of her clients' needs elevates estate planning to top tier.
This review is for Angel's book, Swedish Death Cleaning the American Way. Disclaimer: I'm a client of Angel's and I think she's great, but I can still be objective in my review! If you are a novice to the concept of decluttering/organization, much of this will be new. If it's something you've already done a lot in your life (I'm a serial purger), the tips/tricks will seem familiar -- but that's not what this is about. It's more about the mindset than the method, which is what was new for me. I've personally done every tip in her book except for "micro-decluttering" (short, timed activities that help with focus & clarity -- and I can't wait to try it!), but I've always just approached it from the standpoint of "I have too many things and some stuff has to go." Angel's book made me look at it completely differently: from the standpoint of simplification and minimization. As I read, I was frequently reminded of being in my 20s and not having much money (ergo, not having much stuff either). Despite money being tight, my life was SO much easier because I wasn't surrounded by things pulling my brain in sixty different directions (a computer, a phone, an e-reader, the TV, puzzles, books, diamond paintings, scrapbooking stuff, sewing, and content, content, content everywhere!). I had a TV (no cable) and a VCR, a stereo w/music, books, my cats, and that was enough. Going back to that level of stuff isn't necessarily the goal, but I am definitely rethinking which things truly makes me happy and which have come to feel more like an obligation than a pastime. There were some parts of the book less applicable to me. I'm single with no children, and there is a lot in the book that incorporates family. Also, despite how much stuff I have, I don't really have clutter because everything has its place and I already put things where they belong. I just want fewer things to put away. Ultimately, I think this book is helpful to anyone at any stage of their simplification journey and I strongly recommend it. Giving four stars instead of five because A) there were some copy errors and editing choices I would have done differently; and B) Angel's writing reminds me of Pasternak's Dr. Zhivago (a little too flowery for my taste). But you should still totally read it! :)
Angel is amazing!!
Angel has been my legal counsel through many issues over the past decade. She is clear, compassionate, down to earth, extremely knowledgeable and very patient as she guides you through what is often a stressful situation or process. These are qualities that make her work true to her name and are rare in this world. I highly recommend her to anyone seeking help with estate planning or issues with tenant landlord law.
Angel is knowledgeable, professional, and genuinely cares about her clients!
