I spent some time at the Jacksonville Library reading and doing research. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I needed information on a specific topic, and they guided me directly to the right resources. The Lewis Ansbacher Map Collection is especially impressive. The map collection includes antiquarian maps of Florida and Florida cities, North and South America, and the World. It includes historical views and plates focusing on northern Florida. Very interesting. You’re also invited to use a huge screen TV to search for details on each map! The library also offers services where people can convert old hard drives, video cassettes, and DVDs into digital formats like MP4. A fantastic service! The library is welcoming and open-minded, including toward people experiencing homelessness.
The Library is a loved resource here in the first coast. From free cons to educational and artistic exhibitions you can count on JPL to always deliver for their community. I wish they would host more Pop up cons and nerd community activities, they also need to talk to the city about funding these things properly to give our community the best experiences at these events they can.
Spent two days at the Jax Public Library for a mini conference. The Library had a perfect conference space for us. It was beautiful and very clean. The cleaning staff came and checked on us continuously. The restrooms in the facility were also very clean and maintained. I noticed these wrapped books for Valentine's day and I absolutely LOVE this idea. I live in Leon County and frequent our main Library and I wish they would do this. It's truly sooo cute. Also wanted to say that this library has great lighting and it feels very welcoming.
Suffers from the same plight as almost all grand public libraries: they become de facto homeless shelters. I was asked for money. Truly great library though.
During a recent visit to the Jacksonville Main Library downtown, I discovered an incredible section dedicated to historical maps. Tucked away in their special collections area, this treasure trove features large, beautifully preserved maps- some dating back hundreds of years. From old city planning layouts to rare regional and world maps, it's a fascinating glimpse into how people once saw the world. The staff were helpful and knowledgeable, and the atmosphere was quiet and welcoming-perfect for diving into local history. If you're into cartography, research, or just curious about the past, this collection is absolutely worth exploring.
