  We were with John Hess for several years. During that time, our investments never grew, even though we were paying into them. Fast forward to the straw that broke the camel's back. Mr. Hess spent alot of time pitching an IUL (indexed universal life) policy to us as an investment vehicle. What he didn't explain is that if you cannot fund all of the required premiums in the first year, you lose every penny. Then we discover that the commission for Mr. Hess is between 80% and 110% of the premiums in the first year, which seems to be why we were steered to the IUL in the first place. The worst part, is when we called Mr. Hess to try to get our money out of this policy, when he told us we'd lose it, he actually laughed. Fortunately we were able to claw back the nearly $17,000 that we'd paid in. John Hess is unethical, deceptive, and should be avoided. Do not do business with him unless you like losing money while Mr. Hess goes on multiple vacations each year on your money. Side note - his assistant Daniela is just as bad. It takes her months, literally months, to process the simplest documents, she loses paperwork, can't keep up with emails, sends documents with missing information, etc. Turns out, she has a second full time job that is seemingly a huge distraction. If one cannot manage multiple gigs, stick with one and at least try to be good at that one.
