  CHURCH VS PIZZERIA: Despite previously getting the OK from the St. Johns County Planning & Zoning Board, a pizza restaurant in Hastings won’t be able to serve beer and wine after all. Main St. Pizza & Ice Cream is just across the street from First Baptist Church of Hastings, and county regulations don’t allow alcohol to be served within 1,000 feet of a church unless an exemption is granted. The Planning & Zoning Board approved restaurant owner Matthew Glass’ exemption, but the church appealed, citing concerns about drunken drivers, “moral degradation” and setting a bad example for children. Glass argued that serving alcohol would bring more money into the tiny unincorporated community. But county commissioners yesterday said they want to limit exemptions and play by the rules, so they ultimately sided with the church. (Jacksonville Today)
