My experience with Citizens Property Insurance was extremely poor. Their failure to clearly communicate the non-renewal, correct errors, and provide timely notice caused confusion and financial harm. We are still recovering from Hurricane Helene, our home is still under repair, and yet the insurance companies continue to leave us underinsured and financially burdened despite our current situation. I was left to absorb the resulting loss, even though multiple parties benefited from the transaction.
My experience with Citizens Property Insurance was deeply disappointing. I received a cancellation notice with limited time to secure replacement coverage, placing me in an extremely vulnerable position as a property owner. The reasons listed in the notice were confusing and did not clearly explain the central issue—that Citizens does not insure short-term rental properties. There was also little meaningful guidance about what I needed to do next or how to prevent a lapse in coverage. I had to make repeated calls, leave messages, seek clarification, and ultimately pursue help elsewhere while the cancellation deadline approached. I understand that every insurer has underwriting restrictions. My dissatisfaction is with how this was communicated and handled. When someone’s property and financial security are at stake, timely explanations and practical assistance matter. Unfortunately, I did not receive that level of service and cannot recommend Citizens based on my experience.
Since early March have been dealing with Citizens trying to get almost $3,500 refunded that was paid to them in error to citizens by my mortgage company on a canceled policy. The refund was supposed to go to me to re-deposit into my escrow. I requested it go back to pennymac mortgage direct. Well it was mailed to them March 23rd. to a nonexistent address. Have had hours of calls, being put on hold, getting transferred etc.. over the last month and a half between both my lender and Citizens and now being told by Citizens I need a letter from pennymac stating to have the check sent to me the homeowner even though thats the normal process and I'm the one who requested be sent to pennymac verbally, not even in a letter. In the meantime I'm no further along in getting the money back into my escrow than I was almost 2 months ago when this whole fiasco began.
Not good carrier. They have had my claim sitting in idle since October 2023. I requested for Citizens to send an engineer to my property because of the servers structural issues. In return, they never responded. Only to respond in March asking for an engineer to come out and cancelled my emergency living expenses. They acted like I don’t have expenses and bills from this incident. They severely underpaid me and didn’t event list 1/8 of the actual damages. The initial inspection was a joke, like literally they didn’t care and don’t care. My home is still in disfunction. They’re not a good company!
Very personable as well as competent technicians and variety of services, I had a very enjoyable pedicure
