We’ve been coming to St. Augustine for family vacations every year for about 20 years, and we’ve been buying knives from Bear Mountain Outfitters for roughly the same amount of time. Ted and crew were the guy who got me started collecting and loving knives! Every single visit the staff has been fantastic — knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely interested in helping you find the right piece. They carry top-quality knives from brands like Benchmade, Microtech, Kershaw, Spyderco, and others, plus swords and all kinds of cool gear. It’s the kind of place where you can get into a real conversation about which steel holds an edge better or which is easier to sharpen. And more than once, while I’m standing there trying to decide on a new knife for my collection, someone new walks in who’s just getting started and a whole new discussion opens up again, they have the patience to explain and show different knives to new guy that have interest. I love that about this shop. This year I picked up a beautiful bench made Osborne Micarta blue and white speckles, m390 steel with anodized bits that are gold. The knife if beautiful, light and keeps a razor sharp edge. Out the shop it came hair popping sharp. I’ll keep coming back as long as we’re still vacationing in St. Augustine and Bear Mountain is still open. The idea that the city wants to turn Ted’s shop into public bathrooms is absolutely abhorrent. Leave the local businesses alone and build somewhere else.
What a great experience! Met Ted the owner and along with a great conversation, his knowledge about the knife I bought was so helpful in my purchase. We talked about my upcoming camping trip to the Smokey Mountains with my son and gave me some great tips on my adventure. If you love all things knives this is a must visit. Pass all the other places. Also Christina was also wonderful.
Ted was amazing! They walked my son through all the different knives and all of his current options for his first Cub Scout knife!! He had preferences about a pull open versus a flip open and honestly the service just could not have been more amazing. They have such a selection absolutely stop by worth every penny.
Does a bear poop in the forest? I honestly don't know. I'm not a bear, and I've never conducted the research. What I do know is that I'd rather spend an hour shopping at Bear Mountain Outfitters than spend five minutes in a public bathroom. The staff were friendly, the selection was great, and I left with gear I didn't know I needed but now can't live without. Unlike a bathroom, this place smelled nice, had useful things inside, and nobody made eye contact with me while I was peeing.
An interesting store. Great selection of knives, some swords, collectors and novelty items as well as some souvenirs. The guy at the register was very nice and had a great conversation with us.
