📍 Location & Description Address: 76 S Laura St (formerly near Jacksonville Landing at Water St), Downtown Jacksonville . It depicts President Andrew Jackson on a rearing horse, modeled after Clark Mills’s famous 1853 statue in Washington, D.C. . Created in 1987, it is a bronze replica weighing around 2,800 lb, and was moved to its current site in 2010 during Laura Street improvements. . 🏛️ Historical & Cultural Significance Jackson, the city’s namesake since 1822, was a pivotal U.S. figure—seen as both a populist hero and a controversial president responsible for policies like the Indian Removal Act (1830). . Sculpted by Mills, the statue is part of a quartet of equestrian Jacksons—others in Washington, New Orleans, and Nashville. Mills’s work was innovative: the first in the world to balance solely on the horse’s hind legs without external supports. . The statue is even featured in Jacksonville’s flag and seal, symbolizing civic identity. . ⚠️ Community & Maintenance Notes Over the years, the statue has experienced vandalism, notably in June 2020, when protesters painted slogans referencing Jackson’s role in “Trail of Tears.” Authorities promptly cleaned it. . It ranks high in the city’s public art care order and was restored in 2014, as part of a larger city monuments maintenance program. . Despite debates on Confederate and colonial monuments, Jacksonville's mayor and council maintained that the Jackson statue would remain as a historic namesake, even as other monuments have been removed. . 💡 Visiting Tips The statue stands at a traffic circle intersection, next to Riverside Plaza, making it easy to spot and access. . Ideal for visits around sunset (“golden hour”), it's a popular photo spot near the Riverwalk, cafeterias, and event space. . ✅ In Summary A striking bronze equestrian statue honoring Jacksonville’s namesake president, the Andrew Jackson monument combines artistic innovation, civic symbolism, and a touch of controversy. Whether you’re into history, art, or civic exploration, it’s a downtown landmark worth seeing.
I am very biased because I'm very interested in Jacksonian Democracy and the era, but I very much wanted to see this statue - one of 4 identical statues. This was as exciting for me as I had anticipated, though I was mildly disappointed that it was in the center of a traffic circle. I didn't want to cross and get closer because it didn't seem like a legal crosswalk. To get good lighting on the front side, go in the afternoon. I went in the morning, around 10:30, and the back was better lit.
I was in a motorcycle scavenger hunt in a found the statute here with Andrew Jackson who was named for Jacksonville Florida. So I had some fun with my $20 bill the picture.
A nice statue honoring an historical figure from American history. Sadly, the deserved 5 star rating is degraded by misguided people who have decided that every historical figure should have their every action judged not by the accepted standards of their time, but rather by some warped modern standard of which they are the sole arbiter. This is sad. History is not always pretty and often heroic actions are not always simple, cut and dried or clearly divided between right and wrong. Is Harry Truman to be declared a war criminal for his actions that essentially ended WWII and saved the lives of countless American soldiers? I can't imagine what it must be like to go through life with such a warped judgemental, inaccurate and ultimately whiny, world view.
Another great bit of history to check out here in Jacksonville, the statue of Andrew Jackson...
