This program used to be something really special. It was one of the first things that truly connected me to the Saint Augustine community, and my daughter absolutely loved it. For years, it felt like a genuine grassroots effort built by people who truly cared. Over time, though, it slowly moved away from that. Many of the original people who made it great are no longer involved, and it shows. This past year was especially disappointing. There was no communication at all about summer camp—something my daughter truly depends on and thrives in. Normally, I would receive an email or some kind of update, but nothing came. I kept thinking maybe it was just delayed, but it never arrived. When I finally reached out, I had to track down a new contact after finding out previous emails were no longer active. That’s when I was told the program had moved to Jacksonville and that we were essentially out of luck. What’s most frustrating is that there was no effort to notify the families who had supported and relied on this program for years in St. Augustine. No email, no newsletter, no direct communication—just a quiet shift. Meanwhile, programs like Stop, Drop, and Roll were gradually phased out, and updates seemed limited to social media posts about new sponsors. I completely understand that organizations grow and change, and sometimes that means expanding into new areas. But basic communication—especially to families who depended on these services—should be a priority. For families like mine, and especially for those with special needs children, this wasn’t just a camp. It was something our kids relied on. The lack of communication and consideration has been incredibly disappointing.
I have had multiple opportunities to attend events hosted by Ability Tree First Coast and watched my children's joy as they explored the sensory trailer. This organization is a life raft for families like mine. To have a space where my children are safe and accepted for who they are, an opportunity to take a moment for myself, to feel supported and understood, and feel the joy that these events bring to both participants and volunteers is in line with witnessing a miracle. I am deeply grated that this organization exists in my community!
We love Ability Tree! Our son has attended many summers of camp as well as many community events. We, as parents, have taken advantage of the parent support groups. So grateful to have Ability Tree in St Augustine. Thank you!
This camp was an amazing experience for both of my kids. Beth Sullivan did phenomenal work to get my son, especially, to attend to arts and crafts (he use to have tantrums). The volunteers were also awesome to the kids and they connected with the many activities planned for them.
My son had a wonderful experience with Ability Tree summer camp. He enjoyed the variety of experiences & activities. We are very thankful for this program.
