We hired A&L Tile & Remodeling to replace the carpet in two bedrooms with porcelain tile. We had high expectations going into this project because we have dealt with problems from the original tile installation in our home. A&L exceeded them. Lucas, one of the owners, came out personally at the beginning. He answered every question we had and took the time to explain the work before we committed to anything. One concern was matching the existing grout throughout our house. Lucas provided a sample, worked with the same supplier, and the finished grout matched exactly. I was also concerned about cracks in the concrete and nails left from the carpet tack strips. Rather than brushing off the questions, Lucas walked me through how they would prepare the floor and get everything level before installing the tile. We also had a decision to make at the bedroom entrances. They could start the new tile where the existing tile ended and use a transition, which was less expensive, or remove some of the existing tile so the new flooring would continue naturally into the bedrooms. Lucas explained the difference, including the additional labor and cost, and left the decision completely to us. There was no pressure to choose the more expensive option. The price we paid was the price we were quoted. No surprises, no unexpected charges, and no add ons once the work started. Lucas was also able to order our original tile directly from the manufacturer using his builder pricing. We paid the tile company directly, so there was no installer markup. Other materials were ordered through Home Depot for delivery directly to our house. Communication was excellent. The project took three days, within the original estimate of two to four. Every morning, Lucas’s wife, who handles operations, texted us to let us know who was coming and when they would arrive. They were on time every day. Everyone working in our home was an A&L employee, not a subcontractor. They were respectful of our home, protected our existing floors, kept the work area clean, and removed the garbage. At the end of the first day, they were prepared to load their equipment back into their vehicles rather than assume they could leave it at our house. We offered them space in the garage. It is a small detail, but it says a lot about how they treat a customer’s home. They were also flexible with our schedule. When we unexpectedly needed our dogs home earlier from daycare, they adjusted their day and made sure everything was cleaned up and their crew was finished before we needed to leave. Most important, we inspected the finished work closely. Given the problems we have had with the original tile in our house, we were paying attention. There was not a single thing we needed them to come back and correct. A&L is a small, local business, and working with them felt different from dealing with a large contractor. The owners were accessible, communication was consistent, the pricing was transparent, and the people doing the work were their own employees. We are already discussing other projects in our home with them. At this point, I would trust A&L with any project in our house.
