Question 1

How much does lawn mowing cost in St. Augustine?

Accepted Answer

Weekly mowing, edging and blowing for a typical quarter acre lot in St. Johns County runs 35 to 60 dollars per visit in 2026, or roughly 150 to 240 dollars per month in season. Half acre and larger lots run 60 to 120 dollars. Most companies switch to every other week from December through February. Shrub trimming and bed weeding are often priced separately.

Question 2

How often should I water my lawn in St. Johns County?

Accepted Answer

St. Johns River Water Management District rules generally allow irrigation two days a week during daylight saving time and one day a week in winter, before 10 am or after 4 pm, with the day set by your address. Established St. Augustine grass needs about half to three quarters of an inch per watering. Check with St. Johns County Utility or your HOA, since some communities on reclaimed water have their own schedules.

Question 3

What is killing my St. Augustine grass?

Accepted Answer

In St. Johns County the usual suspects are chinch bugs in hot dry spots along driveways and sidewalks, sod webworms in late summer, large patch fungus in cool wet weather, and nematodes in sandy soil. Each looks like yellowing or thinning but needs a different fix. A licensed lawn treatment company can diagnose it, and quarterly treatment programs run about 50 to 90 dollars per visit for a typical lot.

Question 4

How much does new sod cost installed?

Accepted Answer

Installed St. Augustine sod runs about 0.60 to 1.10 dollars per square foot in St. Johns County in 2026, including removal of the old turf and basic grading. A 2,000 square foot front yard is roughly 1,500 to 2,500 dollars. Bahia and Zoysia vary. Sod needs daily water for the first two weeks, which may require a temporary variance from your irrigation schedule, so ask your utility.

Question 5

Does a landscaper need a license in Florida?

Accepted Answer

General landscaping and mowing do not require a state license in Florida, though companies need a St. Johns County business tax receipt. Applying fertilizer or pesticides commercially requires a license from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Irrigation installation may require a contractor license depending on scope, and tree removal in St. Johns County can require a permit for protected trees, so ask the office before cutting large oaks.

Question 6

What plants survive near the beach in St. Augustine?

Accepted Answer

Within a mile or so of the ocean in Vilano Beach, St. Augustine Beach and Ponte Vedra Beach, salt spray and wind rule out many common shrubs. Sea grape, saw palmetto, coontie, muhly grass, yaupon holly, cabbage palm and dune sunflower do well. Most local landscapers can design a Florida Friendly bed that meets HOA rules and needs little irrigation once established.
